DESIGN NAME: Tofino Coffee Table
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Coffee Table
INSPIRATION: Tofino is an abstraction of an ascending form, inspired by the shores of Tofino off the western coast of Canada. The focus was to design a furniture piece with formal and visual interest without sacrificing function.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Tofino starts by taking a basic 2D shape (identical rectangles), bending it at various angles, and creating a sculptural and asymmetrical form that rewards the viewer from all 360 degrees. It is the juxtaposition of transforming a simple 2D shape into a complex 3D form.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Tofino is a low coffee table meant to be placed in the centre of a living space. It can be approached from all angles and used to display many special items. Tofino's asymmetrical form allows the user to adjust the orientation to best compliment his/her need, such as laptop working or reading. One unique feature is the slight height difference which can be used to separate the various objects.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Tofino was completely designed and crafted individually over the course of a month in Providence, USA from April to May 2015.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Tofino was the second piece made using the vacuum-forming bent lamination process. Two large plywood rib molds were constructed for the two bent rectangles featuring 3 layers of bending poplar plywood as the core. After both pieces were initially vacuum-formed, a layer of walnut 2-ply was applied to either surface as a face veneer treatment for this particular iteration. This exact model can be finished in a variety of face veneers including: ash, birch, cherry, maple and white oak.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Tofino is a technical investigation into the vacuum-forming bent lamination process. Much experimentation was invested in scale models to refine an abstract form. Numerous sample studies were then conducted to find the tightest radius the poplar bending ply was willing to successfully bend. Once the technical aspects were resolved, design details were finalized to create a utilitarian object of movement and whimsy, one that makes the passerby stop and ponder.
CHALLENGE: Despite the project being a first attempt, Tofino was not hindered by many technical difficulties as each step, from drawing and designing the ribs to assembling the mold and vacuum-forming the plywood, was meticulously considered and pro-actively tested to reduce and limit execution issues. Other challenges included the maximum size restrictions of the wood-shop and the short amount of time allotted for completion.
