DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
A Dream

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Tabletop Lighting Installation

INSPIRATION:
The inspiration came from the metaphor of a dream.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
A dream is weightless and transparent. It can hardly be caught, and yet it is so realistic. The entire setting is placed on a transparent base with a light source projects upward to make it feel weightless like floating in the air. The installation is also a metaphor of the surrealistic nature of a dream. Each curved linear form contributes to a part of a propagating dream.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
This light installation is designed to put on a table with the top part slightly lower than eye level. By following the profile, a person can traverse the entire setting inside and outside, up and down, or from any orientation. The relative location between the box and the installation is changeable.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
This project took about one month and was made in Taipei, Taiwan.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Fine Arts and Art Installation Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The design needs a free-form linear member to mimic the blurred boundary of a metaphor. The member needs to be functioned like a canvas for a dreamer to paint upon. The color should be white. After a series of brainstorming searches, a hanger seems a perfect choice. The installation is hand-chained. Several tests were conducted to the possible connectors, such as steel cables, abs RP filaments, and general ropes. Cable was a good choice at the first place because it held each hanger in position. But it is not transparent. Eventually a transparent 3 mm plastic string was used and surprisingly it held each member in position under tension.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
80*70*35 cm

TAGS:
lighting installation, dynamic form, metaphor

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
This is the third design of a series sincerely devotions. Each design contributes a profound study of orders, for elements and light sources. The first two were conducted in a linear form to contrast the body curvature and the end section. The composition of different shapes was also applied. The last one selected a loop to represent an order of form.

CHALLENGE:
A pair of linear form is interlocked with two holes on each component for connection. There should be four cables and eight connections when the head and end of the installation meets each other. A new method is developed to layout all four cables on the same path and to chain all the components in one single cable as a closed loop. The development of a close loop has a significant meaning, since a dream seems does not have a specific starting point or ending point.
