DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Torsion

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Rocking chair

INSPIRATION:
The chair was created under impression of wonderful sculptures of Naum Gabo and has a name in his honour. As Naum Gabo's works it is investigation and manipulation of space. Like a sculpture it induces to explore it, look at it from every side and through it. But furthermore, it also has a function and can be used in everyday life with great comfort.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The chair was made based on investigation of the mathematical principles of optimum structures. These principles arrange configurations of frame members for a minimum quantity of material to endure a given load. Only 2.3 sq m of plywood and 0.3 kg of ties were expended upon the whole chair, which means less than 1/30 of one tree and minimal environmental harm. Furthermore, all materials are eco-friendly, completely biodegradable and were produced from renewable natural resources. The proportions of the chair were carefully measured and made according proportions and forms of human body to provide a high level of functionality and usability. At the same time it is beautiful eye-catching form, like a sculpture, which is interesting to consider. Despite the prototype was made in white colour, it is possible to change not only colour of the frame, but also colour of threads that makes the chair very versatile and suitable for different types of interiors.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Actual form of surface of the chair was choosen taking into consideration requirements of comfort by using it which is extremely important for a rocking chair. The central part of the back and the middle of the seat were reinforced by additional layers of threads so it gives the best support for a sitting person. The surface of the back of the chair has curved form to retain a waist. The whole form was carefully measured and constructed according human proportions to provide the best functionality. The threads surface by itself also satisfy this purpose because it can change form under the pressure what make the chair extremely comfortable for people with different width of back

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in May 2015 in Moscow and finished in November 2015 in the same place

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The frame of chair was made from plywood. 4-mm sheets of plywood were cut on the stripes 6 sm wide. These stripes were joined to the final form and glued layer by layer. Surfaces of the chair were made from cotton ties and colored wood wax finish was used for the final covering.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
750 mm x 800 mm x 1100 mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The structure of the chair was based on some principles for minimum-weight frameworks. The minimum-weight design of a frame structure is such that external loads are balanced by a system of internal axial forces that are withstood by the struts and the ties of the framework. Optimal arrangement of such a framework consists of members that form a system of orthogonal and tangential curves. There are three basic geometric concepts to comply such principles - the involute, envelope and evolute of a curve. All three concepts were used in the chair in some ways to create a minimum weight design for balancing external load of weight of sitting person. As result it can sustain a weight over 100 kg with its own weight less than 7 kg.

CHALLENGE:
The main creative challenge was to find the right proportions of frame. There was so many things should be taken into account like the average man's knee high, the average distance from the seat and waist of sitting person and so on. And because all parts of the chair depend on each other it was difficult but also interesting to find the optimal decision to bring to conformity with all that factors
