DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Bossa Nova

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Residential Apartment

INSPIRATION:
The apartment was created for an interior design exhibition, inspired in the needs of an executive traveler. It should be a functional serviced apartment, but also an elegant and audacious space, revealing the affective and at the same time visionary aspect of its dweller. To make the interior cozy, inspiration was drawn from the contrasts of nature, giving emphasis to the mixture of textures and colors.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
To make the most of the 55m2 apartment, the areas of dining, living, kitchen, and bedroom integrate a single space, sharing furniture and equipment. Yet, simple strategies provide privacy and convenience, such as sliding doors to close-off the kitchen, and a leather-coated wall that works as a headboard and conceals the bathroom. A revolving T.V. can face the bed, the kitchen or the couch. The interior displays a unique mix of materials and colors, and profits form the view over a native forest.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The layout is functional and convenient. The disposition of the furniture allows for continued circulation around the room, increasing the sensation of space. The entertainment center, with speakers built into the wooden ceiling and a revolving television, can be activated from tablets and smartphones. The user can choose to leave the kitchen open, and allow its characteristic design to integrate the room, or close the sliding glass doors to conceal the appliances from the social area.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
This project is located in Sao Sebastiao das Aguas Claras, Brazil. It started in August 2014 and was finished in November 2014.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Interior Space and Exhibition Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Surfaces and furniture display a mix of textures and colors, contrasting natural and industrial, wood and glass, opposing grey and dark blue to yellow, caramel and green. A wooden table separates living room from bedroom, working as dining table, workspace, and cabinet, with reused leather blinds to allow ventilation of the electronic equipment. A woven recycled leather panel works as headboard and conceals the bathroom and closet, where translucent glass separations allow natural light in.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Research focused on looking into the needs and preferences of the target public, and into the potential layouts and design choices that could make the most of the limited space. Particularly, the research of materials played a major role in this design, exploring a wide range of texture possibilities. For instance, the woven recycled leather used on the headboard panel was created originally to be used in handbags, and was incorporated as a surface material exclusively for this project.

CHALLENGE:
The need to fit the main everyday activities and areas into a single space, while keeping its fluidity and lightness, led to the choice of an open layout, and of furniture with multiple functions. To deal with the metallic beams of varied sizes, the wood ceiling was divided into plans with different heights, helping to differentiate spaces. A metallic pillar, which became visible after a wall was removed, was coated with a P.V.C. pipe, allowing it to be used as a duct for the electric wires.
