DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Nuova Bari Centrale

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
High Speed Railway Station

INSPIRATION:
For 25 years, the city of Bari has been absorbed by a debate on the future of the iron sea which separates its historically defined part and the expansion one. Public competitions and urban plans have proposed the most diverse future prospects. Nuova Bari Centrale is due to inherit the Big Bari studies developed over the years by the Polytechnic of Bari, based on the prescriptions of the Italian State Railways, proposing an intermodal node that moves the iron sea outside the center, freeing it.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
With a new High Speed railway line, Bari becomes great. The new station resolves the problematic node of the tracks moving from the Centre of the city to the West part with a new sustainable infrastructure which produces energy. The design is based on a combination of the circle and the square, with a diamond configuration, mixing the head type station with the passing one. There are three main areas, the glazed coverage of the tracks in the aisle, the two access and the distribution basement.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The Station has a clear functional program. The access area has three main direction, two for the services and one, in the middle, for the subways distribution node. The underground floor is more than a subway, with an indoor square, shops and more, thus the station can be an alive place in every moment of the day. The goal of the research is to make the station a pleasant, clear and safe to use place. The structural issues were resolved with durable materials and prefabrication techniques.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in September 2013 in Bari and finished in January 2014. It has been awarded with a honorable mention from the prestigious "Italian Sustainable Award Fassa Bortolo".

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The Aisle: this area is dominated by twelve structural trees made of precast recycled steel produced by an Electric Arc Furnace (EAF). The roof is made by experimental lens covered with photovoltaic cells (production capacity of 80 kw/h), with an innovative system of tensegrity made of reconstituted stone. Access area and basement: developed on the aggregation of modular arched structures in Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete blocks and precompressed precast units.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Dimensions: 210 x 90 m area, 22 m high. Each circular cover is divided into 40 segments discretized by flat panels. A metal grates system promotes natural ventilation. The photovoltaic modules are composed of 8 master pieces replicated around the rotation axis. Photovoltaic cells are included in the glass panels, with an inclination optimized to avoid mutual shading and reduce the excess sunlight. A mysting system atomizes high pressure water, than evaporates during the summer subtracts.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The project is part of a MArch degree thesis from the Polytechnic of Bari, about the 'Grande Bari' plan, involved to solve the problem of the railway hub in the city. The research themes were the big European stations, their historical and sociological role, the structural trees and the research of new sustainable systems. They have been investigated in advance and merged together in the final project later. The team has used advanced modelling tools such as Rhinoceros and Grasshopper.

CHALLENGE:
The biggest challenge for this project was to integrate four different rail lines to three different heights in the station, turning 90 degrees rail axis. In addition, the issue of sustainability has been addressed considering the durability and the Performance of structures and facilities. The total prefabrication and the recyclability of materials allow to think with serenity how to dismantling the building at the end of its life, or change some parts due to the wear or damaging.

NAME:
Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture - Polytechnic of Bari

PROFILE:
The Politecnico di Bari is an Italian public university founded in 1990, when the well-established Faculty of Engineering and the newly-founded Faculty of Architecture, which at that time were both part of the University of Bari, were brought together. Later the Second Faculty of Engineering was created in Taranto. The Faculty of Engineering, which dates back to 1943, at that time only offered a Civil Engineering Degree Course. Over the course of time, degree courses in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Management Engineering, Computer Science Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Building Engineering–Architecture, together with an Industrial Design Degree Course, were added. The Politecnico di Bari now offers a wide range of study opportunities, consisting in eight First Level Degree courses, eleven Second Level Degree courses and two Five-Year Second Level Degree courses, along with many Postgraduate courses and Ph.D.’s. Approximately 11,000 students are enrolled, in different locations in Bari, Foggia and Taranto. Current Rector is Professor Eugenio Di Sciascio. The Politecnico di Bari is an international centre of excellence which pursues "the cultural, scientific and technological progress through the organization of research in scientific, technological, humanistic and economic-social fields and of higher education mainly in architecture and engineering, as well as the processing and the transfer of the most advanced scientific and technological knowledge, for the development of the society and the territory" (art. 1 - Statute of the Politecnico di Bari) .
