DESIGN NAME:
Puzzle

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Modular Furniture

INSPIRATION:
Sliding Puzzle + Mondrian + "for all" + customization The project began with the idea of empowering the users to redecorate their rooms daily. To run it, the concept was based on the artworks of Piet Mondrian, the diversity of the compositions that he bids throughout his career using the same graphic elements. Finally, the operationality of this project was inspired by the simple mechanism of the sliding puzzle.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Modular Furniture Puzzle consists of acrylic niches, moved on rails arranged on a wall via commands from a smartphone. This design emphasizes the user interactivity, in two senses: the possibility of aesthetic customization of the room and facilitating access to the modules, which makes the environment more dynamic according to the needs and desires of the user and accessible for a wide range of people.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Via the remote control, the user selects the module and the direction that it should get around. The movement of a module can automatically result in the displacement of another if necessary for the desired path to be followed. Unlike a standard furnishings, this design provides that elderly, wheelchair users and people of different statures have easier access to objects without great physical effort. Contributes to the visually impaired as they have control of the location of the object sought.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project was conceived in 2011 by Antonnione Franco Leone Ribeiro in Belo Horizonte (Brazil). This designer is involved with technology projects for inclusion, accessibility and universal products for education. In 2014, with the advices of Rita de Castro Engler and illustrations made by Leticia Hilário Guimarães, the puzzle was possible to be designed.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Furniture, Decorative Items and Homeware Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Modular Furniture Puzzle is composed of modules of acrylic, what helps the user to see what is into them. The rails that are attached to a lacquered wood structure (stamped with a black grid, referencing Mondrian), and it’s structure is attached to the wall. For the modules locomotion, similar to the motorized curtains systems are used. Each module has its own motor and its command is via a app for smartphones. The number of modules and rails is appropriate to the user environment, so the product is purchased by separate modules.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Modular Furniture Puzzle can be seen as a moving furniture, a dynamic decoration, or as a Sliding Puzzle wall. After the initial idea of Antonnione, some questionnaires were made with his students of design, architecture and art, to ascertain problems with respect to aesthetics, functionality and accessibility. And later the proposal was evaluated by the elderly, wheelchair, visually impaired and those with very high and very low heights.
