DESIGN NAME: Hands on Search
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Future Advertising
INSPIRATION: To create the future of the Internet.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: We had invented Hands On Search, which is a tangible search through the combination of the search engine and a 3D printer. Items could be searched verbally and the item would automatically come out of the machine as a miniature model of the searched item. We offered this first to people who need sense of touch the most, the visually impaired. 3D data were gathered from individuals and corporations who wanted to be involved in this project. This allowed the children at schools for the visually impaired to have more experiences.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This Hands On Search machine is introduced and affiliated by University of Tsukuba. To touch is important for children with visual disabilities and we explained to the children in a simple manner the system. We tried to make it fun by including a quiz.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in June 2013 and it launches in Sep 2013. And this project has not finished. This search machine will be used in the future as long as there is demands and needs.
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Interface and Interaction Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: It collaborates with existing voice-activated search. By creating open-sourced Hands on Search database, everyone can post and submit new data to store in this database. Then these data link with a 3D printer to produce physical creations.
The printing design image is people (student) want to touch so it shapes as soft and a little unique. The concept was a cloud, like the ones in the sky and the ones in modern computing. It can connect to the Internet and create anything.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width1050mm x Depth 600mm X Height 1300mm
It designs same hight as primary school students so that it leads students want to touch it freely.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: A team conducted a questionnaire to special needs education schools for the Visually Impaired. We figured out a direction of 3D model needs and demands for untouchable figures of unrealistically size or danger. Therefore, the project decide to use open-sourced could database so that it allows to gather a number of data from all over the world.
By conducting pre research, the previous visual and auditory search has changed to a tangible search. Furthermore, we turned the Hands On Search into open source software and this can currently be downloaded and used across the world.
CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge was to provide a same experience to the Visually Impaired to understand all creatures that are existing on the planet with 3D printing figures. Those searched and printed 3D figures are may not provide enough information to them.
By understanding our biggest challenge, a user experience design was one of another issue we faced. The design needed to be a user friendly to them i.e. the simplest interface with 2 bottoms. Its challenge also effected on a hard-ware design to express a cloud.
