DESIGN NAME: Raimmy
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Ambient and Desk Lamp
INSPIRATION: The designer was inspired by the need for both ambient and desk lighting in their own home. They aimed to create a flexible and functional lighting solution adaptable to different usage scenarios. Research on light direction and shadow effects shaped the technical foundation of the design. This piece offers both a focused desk lamp and an ambient lighting solution that transforms the atmosphere, enhancing the overall user experience.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This design stands out for its ability to function as both a desk lamp and ambient lighting. The light moves up and down, adapting to the user's needs. In ambient mode, it interacts with the colored reflector, allowing the shadow's size to be adjusted. In desk lamp mode, the light can be directed for focused illumination. Its flexible structure creates a unique balance between functionality and atmosphere.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This lamp offers two different lighting modes. The light can be moved up or down to function as either a desk lamp or ambient lighting. In ambient mode, the light interacts with the colored reflector, adjusting the size of shadows and creating a soft atmosphere. In desk lamp mode, the light is directed to illuminate a specific area. Its flexible movement mechanism allows users to easily control the angle and intensity of the light for a personalized lighting experience.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Raimmy was designed in March 2024 and manufactured in May 2024. It was exhibited at FDI Istanbul in September 2024. In January 2025, it was redesigned to create an improved version.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: This design combines a metal body with a glass top surface. The body is crafted from precisely machined metal using CNC technology for durability and stability. The glass top features a special coating that optimizes light transmission. The light-directing mechanism is engineered for precision, allowing users to adjust the reflector’s position to control light distribution and shadow effects. This combination of materials and design ensures both functionality and aesthetic appeal.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The Raimmy lamp features a top glass reflector with a diameter of 230 mm, a bottom metal circular base with a diameter of 200 mm, and an overall height of 400 mm. The adjustable structure allows users to modify the light direction and ambiance, making it both a functional desk lamp and an atmospheric lighting piece. The combination of metal and glass elements ensures durability and a sleek, modern aesthetic.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This design emerged from a personal need and was supported by feedback from people in the designer’s surroundings. The research aimed to understand how users address the need for both a desk and ambient lamp. Data was collected through surveys and one-on-one interviews. Participants indicated that combining both functions in a single product was more practical than buying two separate lamps. The results showed that a flexible and adaptable design enhances user experience.
CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge in this project was addressing the need for two separate lights within a single design and determining how the light's movement would interact with the user. Creating a structure that was both aesthetically balanced and functional became one of the greatest challenges during the design process. Manufacturing techniques, material selection, and the stability of the moving mechanism were carefully considered. As a result, a user-friendly, flexible, and visually striking design was achieved.
