PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Tourniquet Teaching Kit for Children

INSPIRATION:
Most children need first aid at home, and only 10% receive immediate first aid treatment. Most children and parents lack the concept of first aid education. Stopping bleeding and getting medical attention within the golden hour after an injury can reduce complications and mortality, and dramatically increase survival rates to 85%. This is compounded by the fact that the wrong tourniquet material is often used, the wrong actions are taken, and children lack the concept of first aid.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Tournit is a teaching aid that utilizes teaching cards and sound and light interactions with cute robots to teach children how to use first-aid tourniquets, first-aid procedures, and the concept of treating injuries. In addition to the teaching cards and the warning sounds and light changes during operation, the Tournit is also tactile, modular, and easy for children to learn and memorize, intending to teach children how to use a tourniquet correctly and first aid trauma treatment education.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Tournit teaches children how to use a tourniquet, how to dress wounds, and how to call for help in the event of an injury. There are two modes of play and learning, one in which children can press the start button, and a voice will guide them through different scenarios to allow them to randomly respond to rescue situations, and the other in which children can insert cards to learn the unit they want to learn at that time. The robot also has voice and color-changing lights to guide the child.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The R&D design of this product started in March 2023, received expert counseling in December 2023, and the initial model was produced for testing in March 2024, and the product is expected to be completed in October 2024 in Taiwan.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The body is made of plastic, with a silicone arm to create the feeling of an arm, pressure sensors to identify if the tourniquet is too loose or too tight, and color-changing lights to indicate if it needs to be stopped, reminding of the correct operation. Another feature of the Tournit is the use of voice-activated guides for children to use, and the card slots are equipped with a sensor, which will tell you if the card is correctly operated when it is inserted into the slot.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Mainly through the cute robot to let children learn the use of tourniquet and first aid education learning, and the whole robot machine (excluding the arm) for the length of 170mm x width 110mm x thickness of 45mm, an arm for the length of 100mm x width of 40mm thickness of 40mm (there will be two arms), and the size of each card is 150 x 130(mm).

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The survey found that children lack the concept of first aid education, many people are unfamiliar with the use of tourniquets and lack the relevant knowledge from childhood. The market uses real prosthetics to teach how to stop bleeding, which is not suitable for children to learn, so Tournit uses a cute robot and simulates the use of tourniquets so that children can learn the use of tourniquets and the first aid procedures to learn.

CHALLENGE:
At first, the use of Tournit was not clear, so children did not know how to use it and learn it, and the illustrations and text on the teaching cards were too difficult to understand. Later, we redesigned the human factors operation design of the robot, added voice and light guidance, and redrew the teaching cards, after the children tried it out, they found that the voice and light guidance made it easier for the children to learn and operate it.
