DESIGN NAME:
Positive Vision Center

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Ophthalmology Office

INSPIRATION:
Health is more than just the absence of disease or infirmity; it encompasses complete physical, mental, and social well-being. The concept of Positive Health involves a broader perspective, emphasizing six positive lifestyle factors that promote good health: bodily function, meaningfulness, mental health, daily functioning, participation, and quality of life. By empowering patients to take charge of their own health whenever possible, Positive Health encourages a positive outlook towards wellness. The Positive Vision Center is the first of its kind in Mexico, dedicated to transforming how healthcare is practiced and delivered, as well as how health and disease are understood. One of our biggest challenges was integrating Positive Health principles into the design of an ophthalmology center, which we achieved through User-Centered Design. By understanding the needs and pain points of both doctors and patients, we created a holistic space that promotes harmony, balance, and well-being. We began by incorporating biophilic design principles, which involve bringing natural elements such as plants and forms into building spaces. This design approach aligns with the six Positive Health principles, supporting cognitive function, physical health, and psychological well-being. By combining Positive Health and ophthalmology, we have created a unique and innovative approach to healthcare that prioritizes patients' overall health and well-being.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Positive Vision Center offers a unique approach to healthcare through its understanding of Positive Health. The Center incorporates biophilic design, featuring over 30 health-promoting plants that naturally purify and improve air quality. The layout is ergonomic, providing patients and doctors with fluidity and unhindered movement through curved lines and emphasized forms. The Future Hallway, a unique feature of the Center, transforms patients' minds through information and aims to improve their health and lifestyle. The space symbolizes change and transformation, translated through materials such as stainless steel, lighting interventions, and organic forms. Color accents throughout the furniture and decor reflect the Center's corporate identity, communicating trustworthiness, happiness, and vitality. Positive Vision Center also prioritizes cleanliness and safety with high-tech antimicrobial facilities such as Corian, stainless steel, and touchless interventions in response to COVID-19.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
When designing the space for the Positive Vision Center, we carefully considered the experiences of both physicians and patients. We created a journey map to highlight their interactions with the physical space and identify key needs and layout requirements. By mapping the patient experience, we located the eyewear center near the reception to save time on eyewear selection. Additionally, we created an intuitive layout to help patients self-navigate from the reception area, check-in desk, exam room, and back out to the eyewear center. We also paid close attention to lighting, designing it specifically for each space and need. This helped to create a welcoming and comfortable environment for both patients and physicians. By mapping the physician experience, we planned out the layout of offices and functional spaces with equipment configurations set up for easy access as patients proceeded with their visit to the center. Our goal was to create a space that prioritizes the comfort and well-being of all those who visit the Positive Vision Center.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in January 2020 and finished in April 2020 in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The use of pure materials such as wood, combined with futuristic details, creates a captivating atmosphere that transports patients to a new reality. Our design incorporates natural American Encino wood for the walls and furniture, which exudes warmth, enhanced by lush greenery and gentle lighting to create a soothing environment. To achieve a hygienic composition, we have incorporated stainless steel and Corian into the design. Stainless steel is easy to clean and resists dirt and external contaminants, while Corian is highly resistant to mold or bacteria growth. These features ensure that our facility is both visually appealing and easy to maintain, with a focus on cleanliness and purity. Overall, our design emphasizes quality and creates a welcoming and peaceful space for patients.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
2,767 sq ft: Consists of 2 waiting areas, 1 reception/cashier, 1 eyewear center, 1 pharmacy, 4 patient rooms, 1 procedure room, 1 physician office, 2 bathrooms.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
This project transformed an ophthalmology office from a stressful environment to a completely organic atmosphere of harmony, where the space speaks for itself and can be freely explored. By creating a welcoming atmosphere, patients feel more comfortable and are more likely to be proactive about their healthcare, ultimately helping to prevent disease. The Positive Vision Center was influenced by our understanding of Positive Health, which inspired us to add unique details that distinguish the center and provide the best possible experience for both patients and doctors.

CHALLENGE:
One of the major challenges was initiating the project during the Covid-19 era as we needed to design a space that was safe for patients, physicians, and office staff. To ensure peace of mind, we gathered inputs from various stakeholders and found that patients preferred an open space with good air circulation. We therefore designed a space where most of the rooms were open air while ensuring that the three exam rooms remained completely private. The exam rooms featured aluminum profiles modulated at 45 degrees, which allows you to feel the openness between the modules and provides visual privacy to patients walking through the corridors. Acoustic privacy is ensured by its upper envelope, covered with acoustic fabric.
