PRIMARY FUNCTION: Mask Packaging
INSPIRATION: As China's intangible cultural heritage, the Nuo mask has high cultural value. We want to promote this culture in a more popular way. So we thought of combining Nuo mask culture with skincare products in order to better publicize Chinese Nuo culture.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Nuo combines the Nuo mask culture with skincare products to better publicize Chinese Nuo culture. It has transformed the Nuo masks graphically and presented them in the form of masks. The packaging design of the masks gives users surprise when opening. The packaging bags are made of mirror paper. When users use the packaging bag as a mirror when applying the product, they can also read the story on the bag related to that mask.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Users will get a mask product packaged like a book, before use, users can see the name of the Nuo mask and the introduction of this mask, with curiosity about this Nuo mask, the user opens the package before the mask can be seen, maintaining a sense of mystery and surprise. After applying the mask, the user can use the package bag as a mirror to adjust the mask, and at the same time can read the packaging bag like a book with the text on it and itself in the mirror. After use, the user can keep all the bags to become a book about Nuo culture, very environmentally friendly.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The design focuses on how to read and disseminate intangible cultural heritage more innovatively, how to use product design and packaging design to create new ways of receiving intangible cultural heritage, to create new experiences in the use of daily necessities, and to give new life to traditional culture. The designer went to Pingxiang, the birthplace of the culture, for personal research and interviews, and tried various design forms. This design taps new commercial value for China's intangible cultural heritage, while also helping more people in society protect the culture.
CHALLENGE: The challenge is to both modernize and preserve the essence of traditional art.
The creative part of the design is how to combine the two processes of using an everyday product and reading about the traditional Nuo culture. There are two key points of our design. Firstly, we use some similarities between the mask (as the everyday product) and the mask (as one part of the Nuo culture) to combine the two. Secondly, we use mirror paper as the packaging material, combining the two processes of looking in the mirror and reading.
