DESIGN NAME: Wf02
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Wheelchair
INSPIRATION: With the advent of a super-aging society, the need for wheelchairs is growing. On the other hand, adapting a wheelchair to an individual is a complex task that requires consideration of physique, physical disability, rehabilitation, and purpose of use.
Wheelchair seating is highly dependent on the experience and knowledge of medical professionals and the wheelchair user. At the same time, there is a lack of tools to improve seating, such as data platforms that suggest the best seating position for the individual and wheelchairs that can be adjusted quickly.
In order to facilitate wheelchair seating, we have developed a series of systems including IoT hardware for measurement and an online database to provide a high level of wheelchair seating based on quantitative measurements and to improve the QOL of wheelchair users.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: It has a structure specifically designed to adjust wheelchairs for people with spinal cord injuries and other disabilities, and can read the dimensions of each part from its on-board distance sensors to create specifications for custom-made wheelchairs and to obtain useful information for adjusting wheelchairs already being ridden by the subject.
The WF02 can be adjusted in a wide range of ways to support all the adjustments that a conventional custom-made manual wheelchair has, and one WF02 can be used for people with mild disabilities as well as people with severe disabilities who are unsure about using an electric wheelchair.
The WF02 is designed to help improve the quality of life of those who have been neglected until now. For example, people with severe disabilities who are unable to pedal a manual wheelchair may be able to do so with proper wheelchair adjustment. By moving the body, it can be used for rehabilitation.
The adjustment mechanism can be removed from the WF02's titanium main frame and converted to a simple, lightweight wheelchair for daily use.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: WF02 was designed to use in cooperate with our wheelchair simulator "RDS SS01"(A' Bronze prized in 2020) but also to be handy for using this alone. A typical use case start with optimizing a personalized seating posture with measuring wheel turning torque and speed, and weight distribution of user's body with SS01. Then, WF02 can be realize the optimized seating posture as a real wheelchair with quick operation and try that. With on-board ToF sensor and loadcell on WF02, It's also possible to evaluate the seating posture in numbers, not only feeling.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in 2017 and keep going on.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Its frame are mainly built with titanium pipes for saving weight. To make it easy to use, almost every adjustable parts to fit body are fasten with levers for tool free operation. WF02 is equipped with a pair of gas springs under the seat for immediate adjustment. Seat angle and height, these are one of the most important factors in wheelchair seating, can be adjusted while the user is still in the seat.
It can also measure the load applied to the back of the seat, steps, and backrest to quantitatively evaluate the quality of the seating with the data from loadcells. Many data measured by WF02 are sent to cloud data base and take analysis as a bigdata. Our purpose is to built original algorism to calculate wheelchair setting with some information about their body size and disabilities.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 550mm x 600mm x 800mm, 24kg
its sizes are depends on adjustment.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: -
CHALLENGE: It's tilted pipe of main frame has a function for dealing with a variety of disability. With changing the length of main frame, the wheelchair leans back a little and that is suitable for holding severely disabled person without core muscle.
