DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Washspot

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Bathing System

INSPIRATION:
This washing system has developed on the basis of changing the product architecture and also utilizing automation in the process to empower people to perform their daily activities.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
This bathing system is designed to be accessible and easy to use. In fact, this product is an alternative to "Bed bathing" (Bed bathing is not as effective as showering, but currently, it is the only option for those with very limited mobility). Washspot doesn't require any connection to the municipal water and sewage system, so this is possible to use the product in any desired environment needlessly to relocate the user to a potentially hazardous and inaccessible bathroom environment. Washspot provides effortless cleaning possibilities in different ways: A) By placing the user in a comfortable and secure position, B) By using automatic washing tools for areas that have difficult accessibility for the user, C) By utilizing an adjustable shower stand that eliminates the need for gripping, D) By using a hot air blower to avoid feeling cold and also to dry the user's skin effortlessly.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The user interface includes three rotating knobs: 1) water pressure adjustment knob, 2) water temperature adjustment knob, and 3) function knob to activate the required operation (From three possible options: Showerhead nozzle, Automated washing system for the backside, and Dryer). There is another controlling interface on the back of the product which is related to the water storage tank.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in March 2019 and finished in March 2021, in Tehran, Iran

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Washspot is a sustainable design solution that minimizes waste of water. It comprised a water storage tank, heat pump (heat and transfer the water simultaneously and very fast), and four-stage filtration system that creates an ongoing and complete cycle of wastewater restoration and reuses. This special design allows the user to fill (and evacuate) the tank by using a bi-directional pump and do washing as long as desired. This product uses an ultrasonic skin scrubber to clean the back-side of the users. This cleaning system does not require any electric motor and uses a piezoelectric transducer to convert electricity into ultrasound waves that eliminate dirt off the skin. The product is also designed with a rolling door which is a compact and functional solution to provide privacy and grant good accessibility.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Bathing is one of the challenging and hazardous self-care activities for people with various physical or mental disabilities. This problem became more obvious when they have limited mobility or required special aiding devices and nursing services to perform their daily activities. Based on our investigations, disabled people's main problems during the bathing process are as follows: 1) Having a weak grip and limited limbs movement, 2) Extreme fatigue because of required physical activities to perform the task, 3) Risk of slipping and injury due to loss of balance, 4) Refusing to bathe due to psychological issues such as nursing dependence, feeling cold, or unsafe, 5) System insufficiency, including inaccessibility, depressing environment, and insufficient lighting. This project has tried to develop an optimal bathing system for disabled people, by achieving the following goals: 1) Improving product accessibility and users' self-reliance, 2) Facilitating the process, 3) Eliminating the risks of the process, 4) Optimizing the water consumption.

CHALLENGE:
The most challenging part of the design process was developing a portable and compact washing system that is suitable for any limited spaces and also offers a high level of usability for disabled people. At the same time, the product had to be easy to use and also incorporate all required components, such as the water tank and filtering system, in a tiny space.
