DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
The Voice of Ceramic

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Resonant Speaker

INSPIRATION:
China has always been a suitable material for making musical instruments. There is a long history of the use of china(ceramic) as a material for making musical instruments. Porcelain Drum which is the famous Chinese ancient musical instrument, is made of china.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The Voice of Ceramic is a series of resonance speakers made of china for mobile phones. It naturally amplifies volume without a power supply, and obviously reduces carbon emissions. The sound from sound outlet of mobile phone is amplified in volume when entering the resonance chamber. For the same piece of music, the loudness can be increased by 12 dB through this speaker due to the effects of sound convergence and resonance.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
A mobile phone can be placed vertically into the groove in the middle of the resonance speaker box, and sound from the sound outlet of the mobile phone enters the resonance chamber to form resonance, thereby amplifying volume (in particular, the bass is strengthened). Music will be spread from both right and left sound outlets, which enables the sound from an outlet of the mobile phone to create a stereo effect.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The series was designed and created in 2013 in Hangzhou, China, and then gradually improved and expanded until 2019.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Fine Arts and Art Installation Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Over the years, Apple has endeavored to reduce carbon emissions and the impact of its products on environment to a minimum level. This resonance speaker box amplifies volume naturally without power supply, which fits well the notion of Apple. Repeated calculations and testing have been made on its shape, size, center of gravity, orientation of pipe orifice, and the placement and angle of mobile phones. Glazing the china with different ceramic glazes, the speaker boxes will have varied colors.

CHALLENGE:
The biggest difficulty in the design and development of this product is the realization of materials and technology. The molding accuracy of ceramics is difficult to control, and the deformation after firing is uncertain. Repeated calculations and testing have been made on its shape, size, center of gravity, orientation of pipe orifice, and the placement and angle of mobile phones.

CLIENT/STUDIO/BRAND DETAILS
NAME:
Zhejiang Sci-Tech University Keydo Design Studio

PROFILE:
The original designer brand of China, focusing on the designing of creative ceramics and other household appliances. Design Concept: Qi is the carrier of Tao and the Tao way follows Nature. “Keydo” (“器道” in Chinese) is originated from the Book of Changes: Tao refers to the abstract objective laws and Qi refers to the concrete substances. In other words, Tao refers to methods and concepts and Qi refers to utensils and appliances. That “Qi is the carrier of Tao” reflects the relationship between Qi and Tao intensively. This is exactly what traditional Chinese culture pursues for creation. Namely, integrate specific thoughts and concepts into specific utensils. The concept of Keydo Design advocates to treat the lifestyle and inherent needs of men as the fundamental starting point of the design, takes full account of the natural properties of the materials, and strives to make the design of utensils in line with the internal laws of creation and express a specific cultural connotation so as to realize the Imitation of Nature and Integration of Crafts and Arts.
