INSPIRATION:
There are approximately 1.5 million manual wheelchair users In the United States. A manual wheelchair is a device that a user must move themselves or have another person push without the assistance of a battery. In the current market there are a wide array of manual products and price points that have adjustable features, materials, seats and armrests. However, these products lack safe and ergonomic push rims, footholds, comfortable seating and modern aesthetics.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The Glide chair is a manual wheelchair concept to help users live a more mobile and independent life with safety, comfort and modern aesthetics. The final design includes a hub-less wheel system with integrated, grooved push-rims to reduce the risk of fingers getting caught in spokes and enable ease of motion. The chair also uses a self-balancing gyroscopic sensor so the front caster wheels could be eliminated, to reduce the risk of tripping, while improving turning radius and mobility.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The chair is used as a manual wheel chair by pushing the integrated rims. To maintain the sense of self-reliance that a manual wheelchair offers, the gyroscopic sensor will only be used for stabilization. The seat of the chair was created to be dynamic, so it would allow for micro-movements of the user’s body to help combat the negative effects of sitting in one location over a period-of-time. The seat achieves this functionality through a three-layered materials system and flexible support structure that provides adjustable fit, cushioning and ventilation.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in February of 2020 in Portland, Oregon and finished in January of 2021 in Portland, Oregon.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Literature and observational research were conducted to understand user challenges and areas to improve with industrial design for state-of-the-art manual wheelchair components. Market research was also conducted to understand design aesthetic. Top-rated manual wheelchairs commonly prescribed for aging population, were compared to innovative high-tech office chairs. Three design phases explored safety, comfort and aesthetics through sketching, paper modeling and 3D CAD iteration.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The chair is 890 mm tall, 660 mm from the back of the wheel to the front of the seat, and 71 mm wide. Each wheel is 610 mm in diameter. The seat is 510 mm wide, 430 mm from the front to back, and, 510 mm off of the ground. The seat back is 380 mm high, and 510 mm wide.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
In the future, a quarter of the U.S. population will be comprised of people over the age of 65. The goal of this research was to design a new manual wheelchair concept to help users live a more mobile and independent life with safety, comfort and modern aesthetics. Three design phases explored safety, comfort and aesthetics through sketching, paper modeling and 3D CAD iteration. The final design included a hub-less wheel system with integrated, grooved push-rims to reduce the risk of fingers getting caught in spokes and enable ease of motion. The chair also used a self-balancing gyroscopic sensor so the front caster wheels could be eliminated, to reduce the risk of tripping, while improving turning radius and mobility. The intent of this work was to start a conversation regarding the ways industrial designers can improve manual wheelchairs for the aging demographic.

CHALLENGE:
The biggest challenges were gaining insights into the 65 years and older demographic. This was done through in person interviews as well as video sessions in which I spoke with and received design feedback from individuals in this age group.
