Home > Winners > Design #28085 >Interview
Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Francesco Sarcone (FS) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Francesco Sarcone by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design Chasing Space here.

Interview with Francesco Sarcone at Thursday 18th of April 2013

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
FS: The idea was to make an interaction between visual and audio, creating the sound out of nothing in the same way the space is created by something that we don't know and we can't really understand. A speech from Alan Watts inspired the video: "... that's what we find as we investigate the Universe: make the microscope bigger and bigger, and we will find ever more minute things; the Universe expands, because it's running away from itself."

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
FS: I wanted to create the sound of the emptiness and lead the audience inside of it.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
FS: I will release an album with my best soundtracks and this track will be included in extended version.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
FS: I can't exactly say how long in took because it was a personal work, i didn't have a deadline, so i did it in my free time... but i can say that i had this project on my desk for about 5 months!

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
FS: I followed an inspiration, i worked with the visual designer on several short project just to do what we wanted to do and see how far we can go.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
FS: In some ways i was inspired by the work of Diego Stocco, a famous sound designer who use to create sounds from objects and self built instruments; i like his fork flow.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
FS: Musical instruments (guitars, bass, percussions); music production software (Ableton Live); 2 condenser microphones to record the field sound of an empty big room; 1 contact microphone to capture the sound of some small objects.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
FS: I collaborated with Marco Bagni, the visual designer of this project, he gave me some feedbacks about the audio and we worked together to make it deeper.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
FS: The hardest part of this work was to create sounds out of nothing and to describe the emptiness with sounds.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
FS: Once i finished this work i wanted to have some feedbacks and i decided to find an international competition.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
