Retro Punk Salon

Retro Punk Salon is an innovative interior design project that masterfully transforms a five-decade-old townhouse into a dual-purpose commercial hair salon and residential space, exemplifying the harmonious fusion of historical preservation and contemporary design aesthetics. Located within an old military dependents' village, this 89-square-meter establishment represents a significant achievement in adaptive reuse architecture, where designers Huei-Min Tu and Chiu Wei Cheng successfully preserved the building's historical essence while introducing industrial punk elements. The design concept ingeniously integrates three fundamental spirits of fashion hair design - retro appeal, innovation, and uniqueness - through thoughtful material selection and spatial organization. The renovation, accomplished on a minimal budget, features a strategically positioned reception counter that extends outward, incorporating imitation marble, glass, and Southern pine in the façade to create a fresh aesthetic while maintaining vintage authenticity. The interior space showcases an eclectic combination of materials, including metallic partitioning curtains, irregular hand-painted walls, and black leather seats, all contributing to a distinctive punk aesthetic. The lighting design, featuring iron piece fixtures and retro seating, further enhances the vintage ambiance, while the preserved original staircase serves as a vertical connector that extends the rugged styling throughout the space. This exceptional design, completed in December 2018 in Taichang City, Taiwan, earned recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, acknowledging its innovative approach to commercial space transformation and its successful integration of historical elements with contemporary design sensibilities.
