Longhouse

Longhouse is a term used in architecture and anthropology to describe an elongated, single-room dwelling that typically housed multiple families or an entire clan. Historically, longhouses were built by various indigenous peoples around the world, particularly in North America, South America, and Asia. These structures were generally constructed using wooden frames, with walls and roofs made of bark, thatch, or other locally available materials. The interior of a longhouse was often divided into separate living spaces for each family, with a central aisle running the length of the building. Communal spaces, such as hearths for cooking and heating, were shared among the residents. Longhouses served not only as dwellings but also as important cultural and social centers for the communities that built them. They were often used for ceremonies, gatherings, and decision-making processes. The design and construction of longhouses varied depending on the specific cultural traditions and environmental conditions of each region. For example, the Iroquois longhouses of northeastern North America could be up to 100 meters in length and were typically built with a curved roof, while the Dayak longhouses of Borneo were raised on stilts to protect against flooding and animal intrusions. Today, while traditional longhouses are no longer widely used as dwellings, their cultural and historical significance is still recognized and celebrated by many indigenous communities.
