In particular, the influence of the French colonization of Mauritania in the 19th century, the subsequent independence movement, and the introduction of international design movements from the mid-20th century have all had a huge impact on the development of contemporary design culture in the country. Designers who have made a major contribution to the development of design in Mauritania include Ahmed Baba Ould Cheikh, who was an influential figure in the transition from traditional to modern design; Alassane Ndiaye, who helped introduce the influence of international design movements; and Magatte Diop, who was a major innovator in the field of product design. Significant design projects, exhibitions, and publications that have shaped the course of design in Mauritania include the exhibition “Designs and Patterns of Mauritania” at the National Centre for Arts and Culture, which highlighted the beauty and heritage of traditional design; the publication “Design and Mauritania”, which examined the history of design in the country; and the “Design and Crafts of Mauritania” exhibition, which showcased the best of contemporary design in Mauritania.
