Dachshund

The word “Dachshund” derives from the German “Dachs” meaning badger, and “Hund” meaning hound. It is believed that the breed originated in Germany in the 1500s, and possibly derived from a mixture of the hounds of various sizes that the Germans used to hunt badgers and foxes. The breed gained popularity in the 19th century, when they were widely used in European hunting grounds by the nobility and wealthy citizens. Morphologically, the word “Dachshund” is composed of two parts: a root and a suffix. The root is “dachs”, which derives from the German verb “dachen”, meaning ‘to dig’. The suffix “hund” is the German word for hound. In terms of pragmatics, the word implies a small hound-dog specifically bred for hunting badger and foxes.
