Robert Laurent

Robert Laurent

Robert Laurent (1890-1970) was a prominent American sculptor of the early 20th century who specialized in portrait busts and figural works. His style developed from a synthesis of the classical European artistic traditions he was exposed to in Paris, combined with his appreciation for the simplicity of primitive art. He was a leader in the renewal of classical sculpture in the US during the 1920s and 1930s. His works feature a distinctive expressiveness that combine the ideals of classicism with a modern sensibility. Among his most famous works are the allegorical figures of Liberty and Freedom, created for the 1939 World’s Fair, and the bronze sculpture of the “Three Muses” which is a centerpiece at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
