Adaptive reuse of a New York City H-plan masonry public school. The former connector is selectively removed and replaced with a mass timber and low iron glass atrium that forms a shared learning commons. The School of Methodology organizes learning as a cycle of instruction, practice, and discussion or reflection, and the new commons weaves these modes together through visible circulation, study edges, and gathering steps. Daylight and clear orientation improve daily experience, while reuse of the existing shell and timber construction reduce embodied carbon and construction waste.

Winner Designer
Yuchen Qiu
Yuchen Qiu is a licensed architect based in New York City whose work focuses on the integration of building performance into architectural design across scales — from envelope systems and façade engineering to early-phase massing and program organization. He researches and develops methods that connect quantitative performance metrics — energy, daylighting, thermal comfort, and occupant wellness — with spatial and programmatic decisions typically made at the conceptual stage of design. His professional practice spans residential, institutional, healthcare, and senior living building types, with particular attention to how high-performance envelope strategies shape interior environmental quality and user experience. He holds a Master of Architecture from Columbia University GSAPP and has received international recognition for design work that advances the relationship between material systems, structural expression, and building performance.

Studio Liminal
Studio Liminal believes the most consequential decisions in architecture happen before anything is drawn — in the in-between space where program meets experience, where structure begins to carry meaning, where a building's values take root — or don't. Founded in New York City by architect Yuchen Qiu, the practice works across adaptive reuse, educational environments, and mass timber systems, developing projects from concept through construction documentation. The work is guided by the conviction that how a building is made is inseparable from what it means. Human activity drives the program. Daylight shapes the plan. Materials are chosen for honesty and longevity. Every choice carries a consequence — in the energy a building consumes, and the carbon it leaves in the world. Details are designed to hold up over decades, not just photographs.
