| DESIGN NAME: Darkness and Light PRIMARY FUNCTION: Poster INSPIRATION: The project is a residency program conducted by the National Institute of Japanese Literature, a research institute that seeks out and researches classical books, which are the life, spirit, and cultural heritage of Japan, and makes them available to the public both in Japan and abroad. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The poster design blends elements like lacquer art with oil painting and nature with humanity, combining classic and modern styles. It illustrates the convergence of books, literature, and art, showcasing the vast potential of classical culture and art. The design captures the essence of classical themes as interpreted by two artists, highlighting the deep influence of classical culture in their artistic expression. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The poster is a special design that combines old-fashioned lacquer art and modern oil painting, nature and humanity. It presents a harmonious blend of old and modern styles, illustrating the integration of books, literature, and art. This design reflects the artists' contemplation on ancient stories and themes, clearly demonstrating the significant influence of traditional culture on their artwork. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was launched in 2017 to open up the collection of classical books and the network of specialists cultivated by the National Institute of Japanese Literature to non-researchers. The exhibition was part of that project, inviting two artists and being held for one week from January 11 to January 17. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: They have developed a graphic design centered around typography that multidimensionally leverages both the artworks created by two artists and the classical texts held by the National Institute of Literature Research. The poster, while maintaining its function as printed material, uses special ink and paper that demonstrate consideration for the environment. As a result, it not only fulfills its role as a poster but also reflects a high level of consideration in projects related to national involvement.
