INSPIRATION:
Plastic's introduction has drawn both praise and criticism. Its unmatched convenience makes it indispensable, but its environmental impact is concerning. In my opinion, plastic's eco-impact largely rests on our handling. When recycled efficiently, its harm lessens. Moreover, achieving design goals with minimal plastic material signifies sustainable design. Inspired by this, I'm developing a plastic-based design, leveraging simulations for structural support. Merging elegant lines into the chair's design, I aim to balance aesthetics with mechanics.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Spidique is a chair manufactured using 3D printing technology. Its shape calculation and design were carried out using the Ameba software, which employs the BESO (Bidirectional Evolutionary Structural Optimization) algorithm for topological optimization. A primary challenge during the design process was how to further optimize and redesign the computed chair shape.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Operation: 1. Initialize the algorithm with set parameters. 2. Run the algorithm to get the initial chair design. 3. Designers evaluate the computer-generated model. Process: 1. Refine the model post-review, emphasizing ergonomics. 2. Create a prototype, using methods like 3D printing. 3. Test the prototype's comfort and durability. 4. Analyze feedback, refine the design as needed, and repeat until optimal. Interaction: 1. Designers input parameters and refine the algorithm's output. 2. Physical prototypes help designers assess design quality. 3. End-users test the chair, providing comfort and usability feedback. 4. Designers work with the production team to ensure the design is production-ready.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
This design research focuses on the application of 3D printing technology in furniture manufacturing, aiming to explore its potential impact on innovation and environmental sustainability. I employed a comparative analysis, contrasting the efficiency, material usage, and environmental footprint between traditional furniture production and 3D printed furniture. Data collection primarily relied on surveys involving 20 furniture designers and 100 general consumers, and we also crafted a series of prototypes using CAD software and 3D printers. The results revealed that 3D printing technology can reduce material waste by approximately 25% and shorten production time by about 30% in furniture manufacturing. This discovery underscores the significant innovation opportunities 3D printing introduces to the furniture design industry, while also presenting a reduced environmental impact. In real-life implications, this suggests that the furniture sector is on the cusp of a transformative shift, which could not only stimulate commercial growth but also reshape consumption patterns and innovative thinking in the design world.

CHALLENGE:
Navigating the optimization of the chair's computed shape posed a significant challenge. Historically, chair designs have been a blend of functionality and aesthetics, crafted over centuries of human experience. Today's social perspective demands both comfort and sustainability. While computation provides precise design outcomes, it sometimes lacks the human touch essential for ergonomics and visual appeal. External factors, such as production constraints, also influenced design choices. Moreover, with evolving technology, leveraging the right tools for accurate simulations was paramount. Bridging this gap between computational efficiency and human-centric design was the crux of my challenge.
