Assigning a Quality Score for Design Competitions - Organizers and Sponsors

Abstract:  Organizers and Sponsors could be lead actors when defining the success of a design competition and its credibility, involving many different bodies could be useful to increase the dissemination of results, spread of news and by doing so having better submissions and designs. This information could play a decisive role on entrants’ preference to join a design competition or not. This paper discusses how we could calculate a raw score for Organizers and Sponsors.

First of all, to calculate a raw quality score for organizers and sponsors details, we are going to check press and public communication by the competition organizer to find out relevant information such as organizer and sponsors names, sponsor types and sponsorship types from flyers, call for entries and posters, plus we check the competition website, any press releases and also the sponsors websites to retrieve further information. If we cannot find this information with aforementioned methods, we send the competition organizers an email to ask them.  We use the organizers and sponsors score sheet to calculate the raw store for organizers and sponsors.

Organizers and Sponsors score is calculated from the following criteria: The Organizer, Number of Sponsors, Website of Sponsors, Sponsor Types and Sponsorship Types.

Please note that for the organizer and sponsor scores, we do not consider other factors such as fees, jury details, country of origin and establishment dates, website and country of origin of the organizer etc. as they are discussed in detail in relevant sections.

Collected Information: Organizer and Sponsors’ Information and Backgrounds.

Organizer and Sponsors Score Sheet:

  1. Organizer
    1. Name of the Organizer, Score++50
      It is important for many designers to know who is behind a design competition.
    2. Type of the Organizer, Score++50
      It is equally important for many designers to know what kind of entity is behind a design competition, such as a company or non-profit organization etc.
  2. Sponsors
    For each sponsors and involved bodies such as patronages, media partners etc, we check the name, type and sponsorship type of the sponsors.
    1. Name of the Sponsor, Score++2
      The name of the sponsor is important for designers and plays a role during the competition selection process before participating, providing this information is a plus.
    2. Type of Sponsor, Score++2
      Type of the sponsor is equally important, whether a company or non-profit organization, this information could be viable for designers.
    3. Type of Sponsorship, Score++2
      The type of sponsorship describes the sponsors involvement to the competition, such as patronage, media partner etc.
    4. Website of the Sponsor, Score++
      The website of the sponsor is useful in case the designers would like to check in detail the involved bodies of the competition.
  3. Total Number of Sponsors, Score++
    Providing the total number of sponsors actually does not change the quality of the competition, but if there are sponsors, or some other partners, they should definetely be indicated.
  4. Other Sponsors or Partners URL, Score++5
    If there are more than 10 sponsors, this page should include the remaining sponsors. In addition there should be a special page on the competition website that lists and gives information about all the sponsors, including links to their websites so that designers can check the involved parties.

Maximum Possible Score for Organizer and Sponsors (176) is reached by a design competition with the following configuration:
