DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Ristorante Fontana

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Italian Restaurant

INSPIRATION:
We wanted to design a space that would evoke the history of this long-standing restaurant. We also wanted to upcycle existing materials to create an interior where the image of geological strata would be associated with the passage of time.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
After removing the bricks from this a popular 30-year old Italian restaurant, we pulverized them and mixed them with soil. We then compressed this mixture using an ancient Japanese rammed earth technique. Using this for the walls created the image of geological strata, which represent the history of this restaurant. We added a gallery in the corridor connecting the entrance hall to the dining room along with a walk-in wine cellar. This luxurious design combines both classic and modern elements.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
This restaurant is only one space because it is constructed from handmade things in stead of ready-made products. These design elements serve to express the sense of luxury that the client was seeking while also providing patrons with a sense of well-being.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
This project started in 2017, Fukuoka,Japan and finished in 2018,Fukuoka,Japan.(This restaurant has opened in 2018)

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Interior Space and Exhibition Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
We used an ancient Japanese rammed earth technique to make the walls. The soil of using contains the pulverized old European bricks. We created the space, likes inside of the layer of earth. And also, we created a marble mosaic art on the ceiling, which is in the motif of the Dumo's rose window in Milano, Italy.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
276.7 square meter (W22950mm x D19500mm x H4800mm)

TAGS:
ristorante, fontana, restaurant, interior, history, japanese technique

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
We combined classical and modern elements in a way that pays homage to the restaurant's tradition while also evoking a sense of novelty.

CHALLENGE:
We challenge to use a traditional method of Japanese rammed earth technique. Recently, the number of craftsman is decreasing. We think we must change this situation.
