The physical award is inspired by a burning torch, symbolizes enlightenment, hope and truth, and blazing with perseverance and patience. The recipient of the award represents both the flame in addition to acting as the carrier of the torch, who guide others with fortitude, determination, and strength. The ascending staircase reveals the growing and climbing aspects of fulfilling one’s purpose, while the trio of metallic rods reinforces the flame with integrity, sustainability, and fortitude.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
This project is to design the inaugural ‘In the Arena Award’ presented to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in November 2018.Team of ten design students under the creative direction from the professor, worked together to conceptualize the award to recognize those who have dedicated their lives to public service. The physical award and its case, overall branding, promotional collateral, and letterpressed program and citation were designed and fabricated by students team in-house.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The physical award present diverse color reflection based on perspectives. It was placed in a dark oak wood case designed and fabricated Using a magnetic closure, the case open from one vertical edge of the cuboid.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project, designing the In The Arena award, started in August 2018 and finished in November 2018, and was presented to Secretary Clinton on November 13, 2018, during a private evening ceremony in the Lady Bird Johnson Auditorium in Austin, Texas.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The final production of the physical award was done by students using in-house facilities. The clear acrylic structure was designed using Rhino and Grasshopper, then exported as flat vector files for laser cutting. The gradual color coordination was created using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Bridge then printed over the individual acrylic pieces using UV printer. The 48 individual layers in different sizes and colors were then assembled using three brass rods in the core over a Texas limestone base.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Over the course of several months, the team worked to conceptualize the award. They brainstormed together with clients to identify values that represent the meaning of the award, and researched, developed ideas and created prototypes using a variety of materials and processes. Brainstorming: The team began by identifying values that represented the meaning of the award, the inaugural recipient, and the future recipients, then select the key values that should be emphasized by the award. Research: The team gathered images that embodied the key values, then categorized them to create mood boards. Idea Development: The conceptualizing phase started with quick, rough sketching to come up with as many ideas as possible, then discuss to develop the ideas further together. Prototyping: The next step was to transform the idea sketches into three-dimensions low-fidelity prototypes which allowed the team to visualize the chosen concepts in a more tangible manner. Development: The team presented nine low-fidelity prototypes to client. The client chosen four concepts to be further developed. The team created the final prototypes using digital fabrication techniques, including laser cutting, 3D Printing, and UV printing. Production: After the client chose the final concept, the students started fabrication process using in-house digital fabrication facilities. Designers whose award concepts were not selected, have assigned to other design works such as award case, overall branding, promotional collaterals, and letter-pressed program and citation.

CHALLENGE:
The biggest challenge was a very tight schedule. The team had less than three months to start connecting and complete the final production. Also, figuring out how to fabricate everything using in-house facilities then to complete the production before the deadline was quiet challenging, not to mention the importance of maintaining the overall quality considering the significance of the award and its recipient.
