| DESIGN NAME: Eluminance PRIMARY FUNCTION: Printed Lighting Barrier Tape INSPIRATION: Barrier tapes have always been quintessential for police and civil defense operations. However, current barrier tapes are hardly visible in poorly lit conditions and lacks the ability to communicate additional vital information such as directions during escalated situations, jeopardising the safety of all. Infusing technology with traditional methods allows us to create a product ideal for operational readiness fueled by the understanding and careful evaluation of police and civil defence operations coupled with the demands and needs of on-site personnel. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A versatile module that houses a retractable and animatable illuminated barrier tape used for demarcating specific areas, no-entry zones or to direct traffic in poor visibility environments such as disaster rescue and relief, crime scenes and police roadblock operations. Heightened visibility and the ability to animate directions gives operators greater crowd-control in escalated situations and helps in the cordoning of hazards clearly. Deployable in many scenarios and terrains at any time. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Its differential advantage is its versatility and intuitiveness. The illuminated tape is pulled out from the module and attached to another module located a distance away via magnets located at the tape head. Connect multiple modules together to form a barricade. The bottom slot with tightening pin allows freedom on mounting on any stanchion/tripod as long as the max diameter permits. Equipped with 2 types of handles allows it to be hung from the top or attached onto objects via a Velcro strap. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Project started in June 2018, Singapore and finished in March 2019 in Singapore. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The printed lighting barrier tape Leverages on ASTAR's patented printed electronics technology where lighting can be printed onto a thin film which illuminates when powered up. The module is designed in parallel to the maxim of a new design language called “Refined Ruggedness”, which embodies the essence of “tech advancement, precision & durability”. Defined segments and bold lines further support the clear design language. The housing is made of carbon fibre, making it robust as it is light weight. Built to withstand adverse weather conditions and allows for fast and efficient deployment. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 108mm x 108mm x 258mm (Module Only) Tape length ranges from 1500mm to 6000mm with a width of 86mm. However, when deployed in otherwise poorly lit conditions, it's effectiveness drops drastically and instead other equipment and personnel is needed to "highlight" CHALLENGE: The challenge was to meet the stringent and demanding requirements for police and civil defence operations and yet keep the profile of the product portable. As operations vary in usage, duration, weather conditions, environments and scale of operation, finding the right balance between battery life, brightness and tape length while keeping the product small and lightweight was by far the most challenging.
