DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Wil 11 Residence

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Semi Detached Residence

INSPIRATION:
Mesmerized by its lush verdant surrounding, we have decided to model the design of this residence after a nature-inspired lifestyle that is both rustic and comfortable. Contemporary design features were applied to lighten up its overall appearance while highlighting the openness of its interior architecture. Together, these elements provide the perfect setting for a cozy home in a tropical climate and an urban setting.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
As this home is surrounded by natural greenery, we devised a nature-inspired design that features comfortable neutral hues and warm wood textures to capture the rejuvenating vibe of its surroundings. The majestic wooden wall at the living room is matched with sheer curtains that accentuates the grand double-volume ceiling, highlighting the prominence of its architecture. Capitalizing on its abundant natural light as well as wide and open interior, we took a minimalistic approach with the furnishing, so its inhabitants can enjoy the alluring tropical climate in style and comfort.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The wall that separates the dry kitchen was torn down to make way for a large island counter and dining table, providing a greater flow while maintaining visual connectivity between spaces. Additionally, the absence of clutters further ensured that the interior is beautifully illuminated by natural lighting to enhance the spaciousness of its open space layout. More importantly, the grand wooden wall feature at living room can be seen from every corner of the common area, as the designer intended.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in July 2016 in the quaint district of Shah Alam in Selangor, Malaysia and completed in September 2016.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Generally, we have chosen a plethora of natural building materials corresponding to our nature-inspired concept that calms the human senses. At the living area, the main feature wall is decked out in slim and simple natural timber planks to highlight its extraordinary height. The giant glass windows are equipped with roller blinds for enhanced functionality, and further softened with sheer white curtains to create a graceful and elegant look. We personalized the design with authentic wooden finishes and cement-like elements, which contrast the neutral color scheme beautifully.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
3,500 square feet semi-detached house with 5 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
We personally think that the application of modern furnishings into a contemporary layout is the winning combination in bringing out a comfortable living environment that is ideal for relaxing with the family or entertaining guests as the soft and natural design blurred the lines between interior and exterior. Furthermore, this design represents a contemporary interpretation of a family-centered home that appeals to the majority of young, urban Malaysians.

CHALLENGE:
The balance between practicality and aesthetics was always a major focus in our design process especially when it comes to interior spaces with an open-layout concept. We need to ensure that each space is illuminated with a healthy amount of natural light to reduce energy consumption. At the same time, durable materials that are easily maintained such as timber wood, exposed concrete, quartz stone were incorporated into the design to provide a hassle-free option for the inhabitants.

I am absolutely blown away by the achievement of the designers behind the Semi Detached Residence, Wil 11 Residence. The intricate design and attention to detail is something I find to be truly remarkable. The use of materials, colors, and textures is simply stunning and creates a truly inviting atmosphere. The way the residence has been designed to maximize the use of space and lighting is truly inspiring. I am in awe of the creativity and innovation that's gone into this design. I am sure the designers have worked hard to create something that is both aesthetically pleasing and highly functional. It's a great example of design excellence and it's no surprise that the designers have won the A' Design Award. Congratulations to Ken Thong and Emma Yap!
