DESIGN NAME: Visa Innovation Center Singapore
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Experience Showcase
INSPIRATION: Through human centred design, Visa uncovers new collaboration opportunities that enable clients to adapt to an evolving payment ecosystem, by developing and commercialising innovations at scale. With this in mind, the revolving carousel became a metaphor for how commerce is experienced today, constantly happening across different form factors, situations and platforms, and yet simple, safe and seamless to enjoy.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Visa Innovation Center Singapore is an open and collaborative space where Visa and its partners discover, design and develop the future of commerce together. It is a holistic visitor experience that combines immersive digital solutions with physical design. The Visa Carousel is the culmination point at center. It is a remote-controlled 360-degree rotatable showcase that contains 3 distinctive day-to-day scenes (home, retail, transport) to demonstrate how payment transactions might occur in the future.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Typically, the center host remote-controls the Visa Carousel by rotating the different scenarios in a storytelling experience for its esteemed guests. From booking a Bangkok concert ticket from Singapore through voice command, to getting the right outfit via a magic mirror at a retail shop, to the friendly Tuk Tuk ride in Bangkok, each of the scenes contains a featured built-in technology that envisions the possibilities of future payment experiences.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in June 2018 and finished in January 2019.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research was a mix of both quantitative and qualitative. In a guided tour, demos with participation from the group, especially one where the group was familiar with one another, saw a longer engagement time with the audience. The challenge was for the demonstration method to be novel to create a distinct lasting impression on busy business executives. A study of the space and a eureka moment later, the Visa Carousel was born, where every swivel is an element of surprise.
CHALLENGE: The design for Visa Innovation Center Singapore was unlike a conventional interior office design project. This was because the center is an integrated co-creation environment that has an exhibition zone, work zone, meeting zone and cafeteria. The design had to go beyond typical spatial layout, materials and finishing with careful consideration given to messaging, safety, buildability, user-friendliness, cost and mixed use of space. Most importantly, it had to possess the wow-factor, evoke high visitor engagement and create a lasting impression.
