| DESIGN NAME: The Light Cube PRIMARY FUNCTION: Multifunctional Public Serivce INSPIRATION: The building facade system is like the Chinese traditional craft ivory carvings, which fully shows the changes of illusory and reality and light and shadow. The glazed curtain walls with flowing shades and shadows have created natural inter connectivity between interior and exterior of the building through its facades, which deliver great modern and artistic sense of space The design has built relations between building and light by means of utilization, optimization and celebration of light. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The light cube serves as an important public function and is responsible for holding the annual CIOE, an complement to the functions of the surrounding districts. It adopts the design of a unique geometric metal truss as the facade that can reduce 30% of the air conditioning energy consumption; a more than 250 meters reception hall integrated the public transport routes, also connected the 37 meters high three story Exhibition Center; the leading innovation in vertical transportation planning in China is here to ensure high efficiency in logistics loading/unloading in each layer. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The project meets requirements of the clients on scale of functional areas with limited land occupation, the architectural design complies with overall city planning and complements urban skyline of the area. The building fully reflects our understanding and application of design criteria of light. It has expressed the pursuit of sense of technology and modernity externally, and achieved energy conservation and emission reduction effect by means of light utilization and optimization internally. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project is situated in central area of Optics Valley New City, Donghu New Technology Industrial Development Zone, Wuhan. It is located on the northwest corner of High Tech Avenue and the 6th Optics Valley Road, to the north of High Tech Avenue, to the south of the 1st Jiufeng Road, to the west of the 6th Optics Valley Road, and to the east of Songtao Road. According to the land use plan, the project occupies a land area of 359.34 mu (1 mu equals to 0.0667 hectares), with net land occupation of around 260 mu. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The glazed curtain walls with flowing shades and shadows have created natural interconnectivity between interior and exterior of building through its facades, which deliver modern and artistic sense of space. Design intention of light cube is to give light form and integrate light and space. However, the intangible, colorless and formless light is just as ethereal as space; the design has built relations between building and light by means of utilization, optimization and celebration of light. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: A more than 250 meters registration hall integrated the public transport routes, as well as connected the 37 meters high three-storey Exhibition Center; the leading innovation in vertical transportation planning in China is here to ensure high efficiency in logistics loading/unloading in each layer. Ice-storage system make ices by valley load power at night and storage them in ice storage unit, and release the stored cold energy through ice melting during day time. TAGS: Convention, Exhibition, Optics Valley, Light, WSP ARCHITECTS RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The light cube consists of convention & exhibition center, conference center, banquet hall, media reception center, registration hall and other spaces. Under condition of limited land occupation, which is designed as a three-storey building, first and second floors are used for exhibition, while the third floor is used for conferences. Two exhibition floors are connected by registration hall to the south. Exhibition part has got 6 big exhibition halls, which can be separated or used as a whole. CHALLENGE: The client needs to design a high standard exhibition and conference center in the new Optics Valley Central City for annual CIOE to be held in Donghu New Technology Industrial Development Zone. With land occupation of only 5.4 hectare, a convention and exhibition center with floor area of around 70,000m2 as well as affiliated hotel with floor area of approximately 20,000 m2 need to be created. In addition, the convention and exhibition center needs to have net exhibition area of some 20,000 m2, and accommodate 1,200 standard stands.
