| DESIGN NAME: Rounded Cubes PRIMARY FUNCTION: Jewelry INSPIRATION: Ten years ago Garibi decided to become an origami artist, and seven years ago he had his first lamp design presented on designboom. Since paper is limited, it was essential to develop techniques to fold unique materials such as metal, wood, glass, leather, etc. While exploring all scales, the smallest was obviously jewelry. Out of a large collection of paper tessellations he chose the best for this collection. All the designs are hand folded (not by molding), showing that wisdom is stronger then force. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This pendant presents the transformation of origami (paper) to origane (metal). The metal is hand folded, just like paper, after it was etched with acid along the crease lines. This is, probably, the only true folded metal and wood jewelry in the world. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The pendants is hanged on the neck, with a chain or cable. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This is an on going project, started in 2012 and still under development. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: To fold metal, mainly brass, the plate goes through a Photo Etching process. Starting with a flat sheet of brass, it can be polished easily, and folded after. The pattern is an original origami tessellations, that is folded from a single sheet of material. The repetitive pattern is the result of a hidden, yet simple, logic, whereas a basic unit, called "Molecule" SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Size is 6 by 6 by 0.4 cm. It is made of gold plated brass. TAGS: origami, metal, jewelry, tessellation RESEARCH ABSTRACT: How do you fold wood? There are at least five ways to do just that. How do you fold metal? This project is a long lasting journey to make every possible flat material to be foldable. As an origami artist Garibi try to bring origami to the general public, not as a child-play but as a form of art, and as a starting point to create designs. Although the research is more of a technical nature, it also combs the area from the design point of view, and try to present high end and long lasting "products" CHALLENGE: The hardest part was to find the right combination of all the parameters that will result in a folded pendant - type of brass alloy, hardness, thickness, line width and density, jewelry size, origami design, and density of creases.
