| DESIGN NAME: Propella PRIMARY FUNCTION: Easy Chair INSPIRATION: The inspiration for this design comes from the aerodynamic shape of an engine propeller. Its sculptural quality allow a seamless transition into the shape and structure of the chair. Propella bears an organic profile with high backrest providing a comfortable seating position. The chair's light topology with 3 sculptural legs holding up its organic body is designed to enhance such inspirational aerodynamic shape and flow. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Propella is an easy lounge chair with fabric upholstery back and dove feather seating cushion. Propella's high back profile provides a comfortable yet private position for your relax moment while reading a book or working on your laptop. This project is designed to promote craftsmanship in Vietnam by working closely with local artisans. The simple yet sculptural solid oak frame is made to show their high quality joinery and great attention to details. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This simple design offer a relax seating position while providing privacy with its high back profile. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Solid timber joinery, hand carving and finishing, fabric upholstery with dove feather stuffing SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 780mm x Depth 845mm x Height 1050mm TAGS: vuhoanganh, easy, lounge, chair, propella, Vietnam RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The design research starts with my study of the sculptural shapes and forms of propellers which powers up air plane engines. The result of this process provides me with numerous shapes and sizes. This leads to a more refined selection to be adapted into making this organic topology while proving enough seating comfort and privacy with its high-back profile. CHALLENGE: The most challenging parts of this process designing this chair is to create organic forms that can be translated into a viable product. A major part of the design process was to understand all machineries and the local craftsmen's constrains and guide them with my limited understanding of production. The result was a balance between design aesthetic and hand-on practice learnt from the experienced people of the crafts. NAME: Vu Hoang Anh PROFILE: Anh considers his most important role as a designer is solving problems by simply answering the 3 questions: why, how and what. For creating things requires an awareness of the need, then how to satisfy the demand and finally, what comes out as the most suitable solution. It is not only the aesthetical but also the functional values of the products that Anh is aiming for in his works. In 2017, Vu Hoang Anh set-up his own studio practice in Ho Chi Minh City and dedicated fully to his personal projects. |
