DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Stag Motors

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Logo

INSPIRATION:
Inspiration came from the 1950-1960 American badge and logo designs. Primarily rustic tins and canisters that have ornate designs and typography. I then combined that with the American Muscle Car feel, specifically the concept of motion and retro colors like a muted blue and gold. In addition, inspiration was taken from era specific magazine ads, racing ads and merchandise, and photos that contained business names and logos on the side of buildings and billboards. The output is Stag Motors.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
A retro logo for a custom car motor garage business that specializes in old school engines with maximum horsepower. The design pays tribute to old school style in typography, colors, and an overall design centered on traditional "badge" style. The gold stripes on the outside represent motion tied to the fast cars while the overall typography represents that old school feel you would see on signs as well as race cars from that era. The colors blue and gold represent a common color pattern used on race cars and advertising.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Logo only. Can be used on business cards, shop doors, and merchandise.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project contained research, pencil sketches, digital creation and colors applied in Adobe Illustrator. The project took approximately 35 hours in total and was made in Ohio, USA.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Several sketches were made in a notebook with pencil until each component of the design was right. Mood boards were used to draw inspiration and to ensure the overall objectives were being met with each iteration of the logo design. Next step was to take a small number of final draft designs and then upload them into Adobe Illustrator. Once in Illustrator, minor corrections were made while turning the logo into a digital format. From there the final design was completed in back and white only. Finally, color palettes were applied to the final design giving way again to a small number of choices.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Vector Logo 3600 x 3600. This is a digital logo only made with Adobe Illustrator. Since the logo is vector based it can be scaled up or down as needed without impacting visual quality.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The research started with looking at 1950s-1960s badges, tins and race cars with the overall research objectives being: ornate details that gave depth to the design, color palettes commonly used in that era, typography choices, and general shape of designs. Through the use of online images of tins, signs, race cars, etc. and a personal library of books on typography and badges, logo element concepts where collected. All of the elements where placed on a single document (mood board) for visual reference. Many sketches were made with pencil and paper where all the elements were combined allowing for the best options to surface.

CHALLENGE:
The challenge was to combine old badge style logos with American Muscle Car vibe. To do this I had to find a way to capture a retro look while still being able to show motion which represents fast moving cars. Since the logo was going to be used on everything from the shop door, business cards, and merchandise, the logo also had to be legible at any size and distance. During the 1950s-1960s badge and tin designs were often very complex. On the other hand, designs for race cars and many business logos were kept simple. So the second challenge was finding a way to represent both aspects of complex and simple designs.
