| DESIGN NAME: Waltz PRIMARY FUNCTION: Stool INSPIRATION: The inspiration of the shape comes from a waltz pose which means this is a stool echoes with performing art and expresses the beauty and strength of the streamline. The overall shape is a dressing skirt floats with the dance in the air, leaving only the lines as a frame of the shape, trying to weaken the sense of the presence of the limbs, through leaving blank space. The method gives the user more sense of integration and substitution. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: WALTZ is designed to subtly adapt to the environment like parties where people chat and dance with the music. In order to explore whether dynamic beauty can be incorporated into static products, the designer applies the main posture of the waltz, a type of dance combining strength and beauty to the form of a stool. The entire work combines the aesthetics value of dancing with traditional stool design, hoping that users can gain some sense of dancing with the stool. It's a standing pose, or a dancing stool? OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The scale of the product is based on the natural sitting position of the human body, and the height of the short bar stool is adapted. When the user sits down, his/her feet can be relaxed. The back of the chair provides a safety guarantee for people to sit comfortably. When a user sitting on this stool, the dressing-skirt-like shape can give him/her a feeling of dancing with it. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Production technology: Heat (supported) tube bending, Metal welding, Stoving varnish(for better wear resistance) Material: Stainless steel SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Size: Width 600 mm x Depth 300 mm x Height 710 mm. TAGS: Furniture, Waltz, Streamline, Modern, Dynamic beauty RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Junyi started the development process with marketing research and she found that many stool designs pursue harmonious relationships with the environment. But most of them tried to achieve this goal by focusing on materials or forms themselves. In its target environment, the core characteristic is its dynamic part. So, she tried to discover another possibility to fit the environment by integrating the dynamic beauty into the static product. During the prototyping process, she tested a variety of users and gradually found out the best ergonomic shape of the stool which also had a strong load-bearing capacity and eventually got the final prototype. CHALLENGE: During the collaboration with the manufacturer, Junyi developed serval prototypes and the original design has been adjusted several times in order to adapt to the production techniques. The hardest part was to combine the strength and beauty of dancing with the traditional stool design. The challenge was to find the most suitable elements inside waltz and applied it into the stool design. Also, how to make it easier for users to discover and understand the story behind the stool was a tough but interesting part.
