| DESIGN NAME: Nietzsche PRIMARY FUNCTION: Expandable Table INSPIRATION: Even tiniest space can evoke people's emotions toward space with just a simple piece of furniture. Great furniture design can be mixed with other products, materials, and designs without any rules or boundaries drawn to define the aesthetics of home and apartment. Therefore, we named the table after German Existentialist philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche to portray and communicate with our customer. The fundamental aspect to this is that no one can define life for others and there are no prerequisites what life is or how it should be, design as well, the only person that is entitled to it is the person experiencing it. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: With larger population growth throughout the years in this world, lands and spaces have been occupied leaving many people to be in smaller homes and condominiums. In this matter, we believed many people who are in this confined and compact environment are still searching for ways to utilize their spaces better together with the design aesthetics. Therefore, Nietzsche table serves as an alternative furniture piece to be functional in a confined environment and for space saving purpose. It is expandable on both sides fitting from 1 to 4 people, however, when it is not used we believed it could also be decor to the space. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The table is created to function with an individual, therefore, the whole product requires to be light enough to operate and at the same time heavy enough to stand as a decor. The interaction happens when a person lifts the top vertically 90 degrees on one and the other hand grasps on the leg piece then pulled to support the top. This operation can serve as a table for one or two people, and when done the same on the other side can be sat up to four people. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in November 2018 and finished in December 2018 in Thailand. FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Furniture Design |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The main focus of the design is to keep it as simple as possible, therefore, the whole piece of the table is only comprised of three types of materials which are Ashwood, Shorea wood and metal hinges. The key to expandable and collapsible function is the hinges located on the tops and legs of the furniture. Our team utilizes their specialty and experience to customize each piece individually by steering the wood grinder to carve in the legs fitting, also, the tops offsets are done by hand with precision instead of machine conduction. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Collapsed 650 x 70 x H750 mm. Expanded one side 650 x 730 x 750 mm. Expanded both sides 650 x 1530 x 750 mm. TAGS: expandable, table, contemporary, modern, lifestyle, design RESEARCH ABSTRACT: With more density of population in Bangkok, Thailand many struggling to live in a smaller space, we believe even the smallest space can mean so much with the right product and creative design. We crafted Nietzsche table to be movable and functional regardless of space limitation, its simplicity is a byproduct of woodworking with common Ashwood and Shorea wood to represent its simplicity and claim that any type of materials can serve a greater picture in eliciting emotions of the people if placed and done right. CHALLENGE: To promote provide an alternative to design and function which will be better for the utilization of the space. To underline that furniture can be moved around, adjusted according to the mood and usage of the day which is easily done individually, and as a result, transform the whole space.
