DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Vancouver Villa on Angus

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Residential Home

INSPIRATION:
Inspiration came from the clients appreciation for high-end Italian fashion and the intent to recreate this luxurious impression in a custom built residence. Taking the exquisite details of classic Baroque and traditional European design elements in combination with meticulous touches of modern creativity, this set the stage to creating a space that became the clients' own personal design label.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Making the extravagant lifestyles of seventeenth century royalty a reality through this modernized interpretation of European classical design, this villa strives to bring its audience a timeless creation with reminiscences of the past, fulfillment of the present, and unfading elegance in the future. The desire was to design a home that was not only a representation of status and luxury, but included functionality for long term to transition over the years.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
This home offers an overall ambiance rooted in high-end and formal stature. While this is the intention upon entrance, transitioning from room to room in this estate allows each guest to feel the transition from the classically designed formal space in the main floor to impress, to a high-spirited lower floor with modern accents for entertainment and finally to a luxurious yet comfortable private living space in the upper floor that provides a balance of both opulence and practicality.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
This project began in 2012 and was completed in 2018. This residential home is located in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Incorporating a modern rendition of Chinoiserie elements, the vanity and walls of the powder room used an églomisé technique to present hand painted florals and birds on the backside of glass. This is subsequently sealed between layered glass not only to create visual depth, but for extended durability. Chinoiserie influence is also present in the hand-carved Baroque mirror frame of the powder room, accent wall panels of the formal dining room and the remarkable peacock mural in the hallway.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Type of Property: Detached 3-Storey Single Family House, Lot Size: 26,500 square feet, Built-Up Area: 14,000 square feet

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
To transform the theatre room from its traditional purpose behind closed doors to a multi-functional space where guests can wander in and out freely, a local artist was commissioned to experiment with various oil and acrylic paints on the white screen. After much research and multiple trials with different mixtures, a paintable screen canvas that did not crack nor stick to itself when rolled up was created. When the room was not used for movies, it transformed into an eye catching art display.

CHALLENGE:
The complexity of the architectural design’s irregular ceilings in the foyer area created a challenge to ensure the proportions and scale of the Baroque carvings, the custom chandelier and accompanying elements were all in harmony with its surroundings.
