| DESIGN NAME: Bent Wood Cajon PRIMARY FUNCTION: Traditional Craft Musical Instrument INSPIRATION: Heritage x Craft x Musical Instrument: Although existing bent wood craft is gradually disappearing, there are still many masters striving to contribute to this art. We hope that the marriage of design and bentwood would demonstrate how bentwood could be more commonly used and for more people to recognize this unique Taiwanese artisan. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The first model of oval-shaped craft cajon in the world. Like a wood bending show, specially building it in the shape of a capsule so that the bending technique can fully show itself on the body of the drum, and the oval shape adds an extra sharp and loud tone compared to the traditional cajon increasing the richness of its performance. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The body of the cajon is formed in one piece, the surface of the cajon is cut manually, finely polished, then a natural burning method is used to color the wood; the configuration of the strings is readjusted so that the sound from the cajon comes out at its best. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: the project started in May 2015 in Taiwan and finished in July 2016 in Taiwan, and was exhibited in Japan 2016/Shanghai 2017/Taiwan 2018 |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: the material is birch and walnut. we used bentwood technical. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 300mm x Depth 300mm x Height 470mm TAGS: traditional, cajon, bentwood, musicl instruments, craft RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Heritage x Craft x Musical Instrument Bentwood making has been present in Taiwan for many decades, commonly applied in furniture and tableware. Bentwood craft carries many memories of Taiwanese history, but with the changing times, more and more options have been made available for people, and bentwood products have gradually decreased. There are now only a few remaining masters that understand this craft in Taiwan, therefore we have come to apply this technology in the production of wooden drum boxes, making it possible for western drum boxes to also become a medium for the Taiwanese heritage of bentwood craft. CHALLENGE: The making of a bentwood box drum requires a higher level of difficulty. The body of the drum needs to be formed in one piece, the surface of the drum is cut manually, finely polished, then a natural burning method is used to color the wood; and since the structure of the drum is different, the configuration of the strings need to be readjusted, so that the sound from the drum can come out at its best.
