| DESIGN NAME: Zhejiang Conservatory Of Music PRIMARY FUNCTION: School INSPIRATION: Site recognition and memory of history is what gad want to emphasize in this project. Used to be driving school, the site is a container to memory of driving cars. This memory is transferred to continuous ramp and tunnel-like doorway in design. The material similar to rock used in facade also call back the site memory of mountains. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Intended as school for music, trapezoid is the basic sound production and design motif, which is outstanding in acoustics. The whole building generates based on the motif with designed scale modification and shape adjustment. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Locating in the north of campus, Music Department has the born privilege richly endowed by nature. Wangjiang Mountain lays in the south while vast plain provides the best and widest scenery in the north. Mountain in the nature, which is the most significant original element, is one of the key words we want to deduce. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in September 2009 in Hangzhou. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: As a semi-landscape architecture, the façade of Music Department loos like bare mountain seam after splitting off stones, which blends into nature while still keeps its originality and conspicuousness. The stacked brunet stone used in façade recalls the feeling of mountains and corresponds the disorderly scenery in courtyard. Boundaries in architecture is obscured when pedestrian walking inside campus. The manmade environment and the originality intersperse with each other, which puts the design in a fantastic balance between nature and people. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: In this design, we want to reflect the concept of music. After investigation, we finds that the trapezoid is the most outstanding shape outline in acoustics. Taking trapezoid as the design motif, we optimize space according to sound reflection and diffraction. Different function space and yards all develops from the combination and redesign of motif. TAGS: Landscape, School, Memory, Trapezoid, Site. RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The site used to be driving school in Hangzhou, which bears the weight of generations of citizens’ memory about driving. Feelings, judgements, recognition, etc, these words should have clear definition over here. As a result, after series of analysis and recreation, all of the visible and invisible elements are transformed into appreciable space and entities. For instance, continually ramp as well as tunnel-like door opening together constitute the conceptual driving memory about driving school. CHALLENGE: This building serves as the music room for students. So how to organize the shape of space so it can farthest satisfies the acoustic requirements is the most challenging task in the project. G Lab cooperates with experts and professors majoring in acoustics, finally makes the design not only a good design in architectural field, but also a wonderful space meeting musicians expectation.
