DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Boxed Waves

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Architects Office

INSPIRATION:
The Inspiration for this design comes from the philosophy of the Studio. The studio's philosophy of recycling materials has been used through out the design. The full height partition wall is used as a storage which makes the space more dynamic and encourages design conversations. The space also serves as storage for the whole space opening up the other area. The lights of the space have three different configurations making the lights usable for different aspects of designing.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
This Project is an Architectural office for a young firm. The studio space has been made into an open plan with movable tables. The partition storage wall is curved for maximum space. The multipurpose lights are made with LED strip lights in tubing forming three configurations. The studio believes in re-using materials. The pantry wall and the boxes in the curved wall are made of cork wood re-used from shipping containers. The glass used in the flooring are old glass doors.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The partition storage wall is curved to accommodate storage for the cabin and the workspace. The bigger shelves open towards the cabin to give space for documents, accolades and books. The smaller boxes open towards the workstations to give storage for the books and other storage for the studio. The re-used glass in the floor is used to break the visual monotony and hardness of the kadappa.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in February 2018 and ended in September 2018

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Most of the materials used in the design are re-used or regenerated materials. For the boxed partition and the pantry partition, cork wood is re-used from old shipping containers. For the Pantry partition it is used as bare bones and is painted in the storage wall. The glass in the flooring is old glass door in a dilapidated site. The lights of the area are designed to be modulated into three configurations by LED strips in plastic tubes with LED strips.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
There was an extensive research into how to re-use materials available and how to best use them in multiple ways. As the space way small many things in the design as used as multiple functions. The partition wall is also a full height fitted furniture that has storage and shelves. The lights can be used as light for the studios, concentrated lights for the laptops and low height lights for the model making. Multiple purposes with simple materials made iterations possible at a shoe string budget.

CHALLENGE:
The hardest part of this design was to get all of these materials and train the works-men to implement re-used materials in a conventional project. Working out the detail of using glass in the flooring with the kadappa was the most challenging part. Also the light details to implement without any glitches and its smooth flow from the ceiling to the lights required a lot of attention to detail.
