| DESIGN NAME: Laihui PRIMARY FUNCTION: Cafe INSPIRATION: The inspiration comes from the location, it just at the crossing position between busy street and quiet neighborhood, leading people away from the rush urban rhythm to a relaxing place. Retain the role of community café, keep the context real and complete, in the meantime, using the right materials to reinforce a simple and pure space for the product. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: There’s a growing number of coffee consumption happening in China, with the idea of “Bringing Specialty Coffee to Ordinary Life”, the first café of Laihui was opened in the Liuyun Estate, a quiet local neighborhood which surrounded by several shopping malls in the center area of Guangzhou. By using the pure and solid materials of cement and wood, to reduce the distraction of environment, and let people take as much attentions as possible to coffee itself. “Sharing” is the main concept of the bra OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: An open-ended bar with a big window is the main focus in the shop, customer could communicate with barista while watching brewing, the sitting area is design to let people chat with each other easily, focus on getting appropriate relationship of human / space and the community. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The design started in October 2017 in Guangzhou, finished in July 2018 in Guangzhou. FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Interior Space and Exhibition Design |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Use simple and essential building materials to restore the most authentic effect of the original building without modification. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Two sides of the shop, one is 60 square meters and another is 30 square meters TAGS: - RESEARCH ABSTRACT: While the third waves of specialty coffee is start effecting China, lots of cafe opened in recent years, many of them are just adding every possible elements like food/decoration etc to do so call comprehensive coffee space, turns out it was actually reducing the focus on the core role- coffee. What I do is to just holding the origin point - coffee, to make every elements fit it, to create a pure space to drink coffee, and immerse in the atmosphere. CHALLENGE: Needs to consider rationality not add anything distract the coffee experiment, and the origin building was very old and separated by walls to many rooms, needs to strengthen the structure and open the space into whole one. NAME: Laihui Coffee PROFILE: There’s a growing number of coffee consumption happening in China, with the idea of “Bringing Specialty Coffee to Ordinary Life”, the first café of Laihui was opened in the Liuyun Estate, a quiet local neighborhood which surrounded by several shopping malls in the center area of Guangzhou. By using the pure and solid materials of cement and wood, to reduce the distraction of environment, and let people take as much attentions as possible to coffee itself. The Roastery is the 2.0 version of Laihui, “Sharing” is the main concept of the brand, and also is my design, there’s an open-ended bar to let costumer watch the process of coffee brewing, an experience area of coffee roasting which is the focus in this space, and the sitting area is surrounded by steel shelves with bags and cans of coffee on it, try to fulfill people’s imagination of the coffee production link. |
