| DESIGN NAME: A Thousand Masks PRIMARY FUNCTION: Brooch, Earring, Hand Ornament INSPIRATION: "when the gongs and drums sound, the play is staged, Yingge is danced, and people crowd. a dance of Yingge brings a good and long life." This is a picture of Yingge dance, one of the non-material cultural heritages in Chaoshan region, Guangdong Province, China. It conveys a vigorous spirit of heroism. While the daedal facial makeup is the most important symbol of Yingge dance, I hope to deliver the culture of the dance with modern design, so that more modern people can understand the tradition. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A Thousand Masks uses the line of Yingge facial makeup as a basic form. And the two-dimensional shape is processed into 3D modelling, combined with a contrast of density and spacing, which enriches the space effect. The dense part adopts the traditional Chaozhou embroidery in Chaoshan region, Guangdong Province, China, adding new content to the design. The metal part is made of gold, lifting the sense of modern and quality. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: A Thousand Masks series combine the traditional temperament and modern design at the same time. So the wearer can feel the traditional culture while wearing those artistic and challenging products PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in Feb, 2018 and finished in Jun, 2018 in Guangzhou, China. It was exhibited in the Art Museum of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Art in Jul, 2018 and the Fifth Intangible heritage fair in Sep, 2018 in Shandong Province, China. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Cast copper plated with 18K gold, embroidery SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Brooch1：80mm-60mm- TAGS: art jewelry, tradition, brooch, earring, hand ornament, embroidery RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Through data collection and research, and field visits I try to understand the characteristics of Yingge dance, then to extract the representative elements of the facial makeup, turning the 2D shape into a 3D shape, and finally complete the design to meet the requirements of wearing. CHALLENGE: In the process of 2D to 3D conversion, the designs have to remain the form characteristics of Yingge facial makeup to reflect the traditional temperament, to accord with the requirement of jewelry worn on the body, and at the same time to show a modern style.
