| DESIGN NAME: The Pilo Table PRIMARY FUNCTION: Side Table INSPIRATION: These were inspired by seeing other attempts at a tufted fabric mimicked in wood. These projects looked hard and uniform. My design challenge was to soften the texture and find a unique way to wrap it around a box. My process involved modeling this in automotive clay and then transferring the design into CAD. The model then was the prototypes to review surfacing before put onto the final walnut wood. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: These beautiful sides tables invite one to touch the elegance of softly tufted Walnut Wood pinned with Swarovski Crystal accents. The design exudes opulence from design through to the hand rubbed finish. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The side table can be left as a interactive decorative side table for users to touch and feel or the user can put glass on top of the surface to protect it and provide a flat surface for setting objects on. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The side tables are milled using CNC and the hand sanded to perfection. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 24.5" x 16" x 24.5" TAGS: Furniture, Side Table, CNC, Luxury, Tufted wood, Walnut furniture, Bespoke Design, Brooke Davis RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The project entailed doing multiple iterations in both clay and mdf to develop the correct texture surface pattern. The Pattern is first developed in clay and the modeled in CAD. Once in CAD the program is then test cut in MDF on a CNC Machine to see the reflective surfacing of the texture. Once developed the surface texture is the modeled onto a functional object like the side table where the traditional joinery methods are applied. Production of parts is relatively fast, however the sanding and assembly process is longer in order to ensure perfection. CHALLENGE: The hardest part of this challenge was to create the correct soft feel CAD geometry and then try to combine that surface texture with the traditional joinery techniques in furniture design such as the spline miter joint.
