| DESIGN NAME: 324 Gallery PRIMARY FUNCTION: Interior Design INSPIRATION: The client, who is a ceramic and sculptural artwork lover, asked for a fluid spatial arrangement with numerous bright display space to showcase his mini artwork collections. The client is keen on bringing friends to his apartment to show off his artwork, this inspired Sim-Plex for the design concept: a gallery within a tiny apartment UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Sim-Plex has refurbished a 324 square feet public housing unit in hong kong, using custom cabinetry to create a three people-living open plan home and with crystalized display space for artwork collection. The studio introduced a cabinetry feature wall with variety of cave-in crystallised slots to act as a backdrop for specific sculptural interventions. The inclined surface and back-lit light trough with yellow backdrop highlight the artworks and lighten up the living room. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Adjustable table, concealed storage, sliding door and louver screen repartitioning the compact home into a flexible living space. The 324 gallery is an example of how small residential unit could be used efficiently and multi-functionally. Through integrating different kinds of smart storage solutions, Sim-Plex created a unique, playful sense of space that suit not only to living, but also as an artwork showroom. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project stage started in June 2017, and the construction at August 2017, completed on October 2017 in Hong Kong. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Wood veneer, Formica sheet SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Organic shaped storage platform In Hong Kong, the size of the apartment is limited. Storage platform or ceiling would be used to create extra storage. In "324 gallery", there is an organic shaped wooden platform which both suit the use of storage and a single bed for the little daughter. Organic shape of storage space helps to improve the bulkiness of the platform. Light trough is under each steps to create the lightness of the edges. TAGS: Gallery, bright, yellow, storage RESEARCH ABSTRACT: By keep researching storage method on web and continuous discussion with client to understand his requirement on display, the design is based on investigation. The research approach is functional. CHALLENGE: Micro apartment is no strangers to Hong Kong, where space is premium. Storage space is therefore becoming more and more valuable. The main challenge is creating a large capacity of storage space but also introducing some crystalized display space for artwork collection. A small apartment would even look smaller if there is too much stuff and look messy. In "324 gallery", a main feature cabinet wall is used to create a large capacity of storage space with concealed door. In this case, no need to use too much effort to tidy up the place normally. The cabinet wall is carved out with display slots so that the space would not got the sense of oppression. Also, the client could display his artwork collection to any visitors.
