| DESIGN NAME: Berlin PRIMARY FUNCTION: Book INSPIRATION: I love the era of golden twenties, Berlin, german history, music, film, pen-and-ink-drawings and typography. So I made this book. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A bibliophile, fully-illustrated book about the golden era of the German capital. In a blend of illustrations, facts, anecdotes and an accompanying CD of original recordings, this book presents five dozen leading lights from Berlin's entertainment industry, as well as the artistic, literary, cinematographic and political scene during the Weimar Republic. Illustration, typography, design, and the CD form a graphic and multi-sensual unit. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The target group are interested readers of beautiful books. They immerse themselves in the roaring time of the twenties. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in 2012 in Münster, Germany and finished in December 2017. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: pen-and-ink-drawings SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 23.5 x 37 cm, 224 pages TAGS: Night Falls on the Berlin of the Roaring Twenties, TASCHEN, Robert Nippoldt, Berlin, Twenties RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The book is intended to reflect various facets of Berlin's (night) life in this confused time of the Weimar Republic. Since well-known but also less known personalities, places and events are presented, many details had to be researched. For content and design we looked at many original books, posters and writings from the twenties. In order to find out about photos, signatures and personal details, we visited libraries or established contacts with museums, collections and state libraries. CHALLENGE: Since I had to manage this project mostly on my own, the duration of the manufacturing process was difficult. It took over 5 years to complete. I also had to find a suitable author and publisher. I regularly got advice from experts. Before the production process, picture rights and music rights for the contained CD had to be clarified. NAME: TASCHEN, Robert Nippoldt PROFILE: Robert Nippoldt is a German illustrator, graphic designer and book artist. He studied graphic design and illustration at the University of Applied Sciences in Münster. The book “Gangster. Die Bosse von Chicago” was his thesis project. Two years later in 2007, his second book “Jazz. New York in the Roaring Twenties” was published. It was translated into several languages and won numerous awards. In 2010 “Hollywood in the 1930s”, his third book on 1920s and 30s America, came out. In 2017 his fourth book “Night falls on the Berlin of the Roaring Twenties” was published.was published at TASCHEN. |
