| DESIGN NAME: Cosmos Side Table PRIMARY FUNCTION: Side Table INSPIRATION: The feel of weightlessness, freedom, and simplicity provided by the cosmos and space. Everything is materialized into simple geometrical forms. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Inspired by the feeling of weightlessness and its connection to space, Cosmos tables are craft entirely in laminated stone. Each table can weight less than 50% if it was produced with a 20 mm marble stone slab. This advanced technology allows us to get an ultra-thin and high resistant marble table top. Cosmos tables are light, simple, easy and multipurpose connecting with you and your style no matter what it is. Cosmos series are available in four marbles references: carrara, sahara noir, graphite and eramosa. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The object can be carried by hand by only one person as it is really light, just about 22 kg. This is quite amazing for a stone table. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in April 2017 in Portugal and finished in August 2017, and was exhibited in Maison et Objet in September 2017, showing two different versions in Carrara and Sahara Noir marble. Since the end of the show, a new version was prepared and shown at Maison et Objet in January 2018 using a new material, Eramosa marble. FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Furniture Design |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: To produce these tables it was used a cutting-edge technology which laminates the stone (marble) in a 6mm sheet. In order to reinforce the stone, a porcelain layer is added. Both layers glued make a total thickness of 15mm which is quite thin but also very light and strong. Later, using CNC machinery the table tops are produced with a half bullnose edge making it even thinner. Also, the feet are machined and put together by the best craftsmen. Technology and craftsmanship are holding hands in this kind of products which means that quality and perfection are inescapable premises. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Dimensions: Ø580 mm x 500 mm, Package: MDF 12mm box with 664 mm x 664 mm x 664 mm TAGS: weightlessness, marble, craftsmanship, side table, coffee table, cutting-edge, technology RESEARCH ABSTRACT: It all started with the launching of the brand OIA Design by the main company BARMAT. All the know-how and technology were already brought together in order to achieve a high-quality product. The raw materials and techniques were already well known by the company once similar ones were used and implemented in the construction business for the last 16 years. The company uses CNC's 3 axes as well as 5 axes in order to get the best possible results. CHALLENGE: After a huge brainstorm as well as a benchmarking process inside OIA Design Studio to come up with the final shapes and sizes for the Side & Coffee tables it was really difficult to finally have a consensus which ones should be used.
