DESIGN NAME:
The Infinity of Imagination

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Poster

INSPIRATION:
The project is questioning the general public's attitude to the mental disables. Why they must force themselves to obey the typical lifestyle instead of complying with their natural instinct? As in most cases, they are stressed to be isolated and are unwilling to be changed, while their disordered behavior is not harmful to the community.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The project is questioning the general public's attitude to the mental disables. An mentally accessible environment is invented to fit their specific scenarios, allowing the disables to live in their imaginative world and treating their disorder as a game. They are allowed to enjoy their own lifestyle without limitations in the project.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
"Point 1 / The endless loop" To fit in with the situation of committing suicide, the idea is to create an endless world that fit in their imagination. We try to turn the bad situation into something fun and positive. They would feel like they are flying and bouncing in the outer space without any limitation. In the meantime, they could enjoy their own lifestyle while not bringing disturbance to the non-mental disables. "Point2 / The off gravity world Based on the research findings, mental disables normally experienced hallucination which make them feel dizzy. To due with the above situation, we create a device that help them to balance their body and move around the space. A world without gravity is created to fit in the imagination. People will experienced flowing in the flat while walking on the sliding panel. They have to force the wheel though walking so as to enter different region. "Point3 / Vertical trade" Isolation of mental disables is part of our concern in the design. To cope with the problem, we create a service that enhance the cooperative relationship between neighborhood. Each resident will be assigned to be the participant and take the responsibility to do the clothes drying for one day per week. "Point4 / The private power station" Mental disables constantly perform repeated behavior which brings disturbance to their life. Our design idea is to create a system that collect materials and transform it into energy while repeated behavior occurred. The resources they received will be used on activities that beneficial to them. The more frequency they repeated, the more energy they will receive for building crops. The system is mainly formed by three elements, which include water, heat and self-motivation as the energy that run the machine. "Point5 / The mystic room" Mental disables always perform under a specific order. For instance, they arrange things in a specific sequence. Based on the order that mental disables have during the daily habits, we create a self-service system that run under the principle they have. For example, they pack things from outside to inside, arrange shoes from left to the right. These principles are being considered to be the sequence in the design. We invented several furniture that fit in their rules, and they receive an unexpected outcome when following the right sequence. When the four steps are completed in the pre-assigned order, three private room will be opened to the user randomly so they can enjoy the surprised result at the end of game. "Point6 / The vertical numeral game" Mental disables is always sensitive to repeated objects, in most cases they will count the steps and repeated the same cycle so the design is to help them to move forward while having fun in the game. The concept of board game is taken and apply to the design. We assign numbers to each level of buildings, participant have to reach the end point so as to win the battle.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in September 2017 and finished in April 2018, which is a prototype that designed for the mental disables. As Hong Kong is considered to be basis of the design study, the proposal is based on one Hong Kong residential building. The site is a 10 storey building that opposing another residential building.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
To realize the design, we have studied the human proportion and energy input to the design so as to make it reasonable. Firstly, the bouncing height is part of our consideration of ' The endless loop '. Based on different height and gender, we calculated the average bounce and rebound height so as to ensure the system work. Also, the frequency of rebound are part of the calculation. Besides, to motivate the machine in the design of 'Off gravity world', average distance per steps of different age as well as the energy input to the design. In the findings, we realized there is difference between different kind of movements. In most cases, running will take shorter time and less energy to motivate the system. When people do running on the sliding panel, it will only take 1 second to motivate the sliding panel.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Order of behavior between mental ill people and the society To achieve social integration: identify living conditions and problems of mentally ill people, we aims at creating a shared living space that fitting their behavior, but eliminating disturbance to the community in the meantime. By comparison between behavior of mental ill people and the normal person, we clarify differences of human behavior and give new approach for fulfilling two kinds of living habits.

CHALLENGE:
As mental illness is an controversial issue that can not be entirely solved by design, what we found most challenging is to identify the needs of mental disables and come up with an appropriate design strategy. Besides, our main consideration is to eliminate the differences between mental and non-mental disables, influence that bring along to the community are our main focus during the development, we conducted survey and carry out design studies to gain our understanding on this topic. Another difficulty is to proof the design works as it is a new system and structure to the current situation. We have to address the technical problems and do a lot of analysis on the detailing.
