DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Stomiiformes

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Desktop Toy

INSPIRATION:
The beginning of my interest with biomimicry design is, the marine lives. I was obsessed with the weird and bizarre marine creatures in deep ocean, and those bizarre fish. I paid attention to a range of features on creatures in the sea. To that end, the seahorse tail structure's feature was very interested me. However, after a series of research and consideration, I finally decided to not look into biomimicry in a functional, industrial solution way. Instead, I chose to appreciate the nature’s form and beauty for their own purpose.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Inspired by complex structure within biological form such within a seahorse tail and aquatic life in general; Stomiiformes is a stress releasing open-ended desktop toy which allow for physical play and mental creativity. By combining the differnent module sections, user can sense the difference between fidgeting feeling and conscious feeling.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Stomiiformes is played by pure hand. It comes with either 12 pieces module model, 16 pieces module model or 30 pieces module model. Such models share the same design structures but create a different play experience to users. The 16 and 30 pieces modules models would give user a more playful and creative feel in open-ended ideas. This free-play, hand scale toy to the people who feel curious and surprise in the amazing organic form. This toy was developed by a series of biomimicry inspiration and reproduced the trigger of entertaining in other successful product elements, such as physical surprising feedback. Through playing this abstract and visual poetic toy, the audience would find out their unique playing style and provoke their imagination. By seeing its transformation and movement, they can also capture the poetic feeling and the form's possibilities.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
This project started in September 2016 and finished in May 2017 in Parsons School of Design. It's a graduated school studio thesis project.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
A traditional mold production with metal die casting: Stainless Steel or Aluminum.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
One single module is, Width 50mm x Depth 34mm x Height 28mm. 13 pieces module model: Width 51mm x Depth 210mm x Height 28mm. 17 pieces module model: Width 51mm x Depth 270mm x Height 28mm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Stomiifromes project was developed within a series of research and trouble-shooting methods such as examples analysis, market research, sketch models, rapid prototyping, criteria estimating , interviews, questionnaire, manufacturing study and reference sampling.

CHALLENGE:
Because the design goal and catalogue is an executive toy, its definition and product description are vague and unclear to me and most of people. Trying to set up a clear criteria and ideal design principle is very challenging to myself. Especially the executive toy examples are various and diverse; classifying and extracting the critical element from each design was important in the beginning phase. Second, the hardest challenge in this design project is, finding the balance of form between the natural beauty and mechanical feeling. I want my design could be captured the natural and biomimicry beauty but also I want it to remain the simplicity and objective shape. At the final design, each unit of module is simple, metallic and technical form, but when all the module combines together, there is a vivid and vital vision from the form directly.
