DESIGN NAME:
Time in a Circle

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Residence

INSPIRATION:
The client, married with two children, is a successful enterprise founder who longs for more shared spaces to foster more parent-children interaction. Furthermore, as his traveling experiences has made him nostalgic about on the elegant quality and relaxing ambiance of boutique hotels, which has inspired the design profoundly, through materials, lighting, color, layout, and surface treatment of the interior space.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Historically, the circle symbolizes harmony, completeness, and indivisibility, so the most prominent circle element has been featured in many traditional oriental architecture buildings, while the design preserved a circular form that was demarcated by round columns along with voided partitions to reduce any sense of oppression that may be caused by protruded beams and columns, as well as to cater for storage.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
In order to create a place where the owner and the family members can share their lives together, the design linked the living room, reading area, kitchen and dining room to form flowing line of circulation, as the daily focal point for family members to work, read, dine and talk together. In addition, the design team has adopted a flexible two-way movement path facilitating multiple openings to the outdoor terraces allowing the indoor and outdoor to link together with rich vistas.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in June 2017 and finished in February 2018 in Taichung City.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Interior Space and Exhibition Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
This project uses marble, tile, glass, wooden floor, veneer, and gloss paint to meticulously integrate with elements such as stretched leather sofa, so as to create a magnificent and refined boutique hotel style with various types of marble to cater for different ambiances and moods, Angora Pearl for the grandeur of the living room, white Carrara White for the minimalist kitchen, and dark grey marble for a relaxing bathing space for the client.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
As this project is located in the beautiful Taichung City, in a self-owned and self-built land-block residence of 180 square meters, the design team carefully considered the privacy requirement from the client, and hence, divided the overall interior space into two main segments of public reception and private family spaces with dark glass door and modern looking geometric shaped doors, so that visitors may enjoy their visit, and family members may have their residential living uninterrupted.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
As the lives formed throughout the time the occupants spent living in the space, emotions, sentiment, and memories of the family members would precipitate with time. The design, in the form of spatial circles extending outwards, coupled with small round columns symbolizing family harmony in accentuating the artistic aesthetics and grandeur of the space, and its design foci, as distinctive design elements for a relaxing environment.

CHALLENGE:
This project is an RC construction structure of a circular-shaped site, with its facade of curtain wall windows, and as a result, the portioning treatment became very complex, while some of the original glass windows were preserved so as to bring sunlight and greenery view into the interior, which epitomizes the complexity in the technique we deployed to articulate the sense of harmony and refined detailing.
