DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
JHT Memorial Hall

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Memorial Hall

INSPIRATION:
The memorial hall is located in a separate clock tower of a church,Its net floor area is less than 6000 square feet.In order to overcome the limitation in space,The memorial hall has adopted white tones and oak in its design,White gives people a feeling of tranquility and solemnity and can visually extend the sense of space,Oak passes people the feeling of nature and environmental friendliness and the notion of simplicity,The design can remove the distance between people and space and strengthen the sense of the affinity,In terms of lighting,Natural light can be projected on the two-storey staircases through the outlined cross on the wall of the lobby to achieve the effect of natural lighting,At the same time,The cross-shaped projection has its deep meaning and artistic conception,The light setting in the exhibition hall includes both daylight and nightlight modes,Which can create an atmosphere of exhibition and practically reduce the cost of electricity consumption,Due to the limited exhibition space,The corners of the staircases are made into an area with rotatable display boards to enhance the interest and interactivity of the exhibition. The ceiling of the lobby and exhibition hall follows the traditional Chinese built structure,The wavy structure of the exhibition hall simulates a flowing river to embrace the meaning of propagation,Which explains the history of China Inland Mission accompanied by Chinese culture,The Mission started in the past, stands on the present and lingers on to influence the future by spreading the evangelical seeds.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
This is the first exhibition hall with the theme of missions and missionaries in Mainland China,It is also a historical testimony of the missionaries of the China Inland Mission in the past 150 years. The memorial hall is located in a separate clock tower of a church,Its net floor area is less than 6000 square feet,In order to overcome the limitation in space,The memorial hall has adopted white tones and oak in its design,White gives people a feeling of tranquility and solemnity and can visually extend the sense of space,Oak passes people the feeling of nature and environmental friendliness and the notion of simplicity,The design can remove the distance between people and space and strengthen the sense of the affinity,In terms of lighting,Natural light can be projected on the two-storey staircases through the outlined cross on the wall of the lobby to achieve the effect of natural lighting,At the same time,The cross-shaped projection has its deep meaning and artistic conception,The light setting in the exhibition hall includes both daylight and nightlight modes,Which can create an atmosphere of exhibition and practically reduce the cost of electricity consumption,Due to the limited exhibition space,The corners of the staircases are made into an area with rotatable display boards to enhance the interest and interactivity of the exhibition. The ceiling of the lobby and exhibition hall follows the traditional Chinese built structure,The wavy structure of the exhibition hall simulates a flowing river to embrace the meaning of propagation,Which explains the history of China Inland Mission accompanied by Chinese culture,The Mission started in the past,Stands on the present and lingers on to influence the future by spreading the evangelical seeds. The whole space seeks simplicity and natural immersive experiences,The merging with Chinese traditional architecture reveals the historical testimony of China Inland Mission across centuries and also the succeeding evangelical vision in the future,Such a memorial hall is unique in Mainland China and is of the greatest significance.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The design of this exhibition followed the principles of openness interaction and sharing,Although cultural relics of hundred years are exhibiting in the hall.it is still opened to visitors in its original form so that people can feel“the trace of history”from a close distance,Apart from guides no additional personnel are present to maintain order therefore encouraging free exchange.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in Hong Kong in July 2017 and completed in ZhenJiang China in June 2018.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The difficulty of this design project lied in the limited space in the exhibition area the lack of consensus on natural lighting and application of environmentally friendly materials. Space:The existing space was not possible to display contents that covers 150 years completely,We had to rearrange contents of the exhibition assign themes to each exhibition area and use stairs and aisle spaces to create more interactive display areas,At the same time,Paper brochure was designed and produced to enrich the content of each exhibition hall,Allowing the exhibition to be more stereoscopic,Interesting and practical. Environment and lighting:The exhibition is opened all day for free,We simulated the energy-saving night mode for the exhibition area in our design,We had also introduced natural light into the exhibition hall ingeniously to improve lighting,In terms of materials,Wood-based materials and recyclable materials were used in majority. In the future,We will continue to develop souvenirs that corresponding with the exhibition contents,So that the history of a hundred years will not only present in the exhibition area,But also be a gift to the hands and homes of visitors and friends.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The difficulty of this design project lied in the limited space in the exhibition area.the lack of consensus on natural lighting and application of environmentally friendly materials. Space:The existing space was not possible to display contents that covers 150 years completely,We had to rearrange contents of the exhibition,Assign themes to each exhibition area.and use stairs and aisle spaces to create more interactive display areas,At the same time paper brochure was designed and produced to enrich the content of each exhibition hall allowing the exhibition to be more stereoscopic interesting and practical. Environment and lighting:The exhibition is opened all day for free,We simulated the energy-saving night mode for the exhibition area in our design,We had also introduced natural light into the exhibition hall ingeniously to improve lighting,In terms of materials wood-based materials and recyclable materials were used in majority. In the future,We will continue to develop souvenirs that corresponding with the exhibition contents so that the history of a hundred years will not only present in the exhibition area but also be a gift to the homes of visitors and friends.

CHALLENGE:
1.In Mainland China it is not easy to have such an independent space for exhibiting the history of missionaries of the past 150 years,The government is also very cautious and concerned about this exhibition,The smooth inauguration and opening of the exhibition marked a good start. 2.The overall design and display are manifestations of traditional concepts breakthrough for the Mainland churches and visitors,The on-site exhibition style and contents put forward a cultural shock and“challenge”to the local community and visitors. 3.From design to Construction, different understanding by constructors regarding the materials and procedures had become crucial yet complicated,We had both perseverance and compromise during that period.
